Will people make money because they can let out accommodation for the extra people expected to go there? no, but the first four words of that question represent an excellent opprtunity for further exploration...

generate monetary income through tourism? noish, but... is there an fee/entrance fee to see this thing? not the "thing" that is now available in Devon, no. But...

Is it anything to do with the RHS garden at Rosemoor? no, but a most ingenious notion :)

Do they have to sell something to make money?
Will people make money through rebates from the local council?
Or just generate more income in the local shops/hotels/restaurants/pubs etc?

Do they have to sell something to make money? indeed they do - whoever "they" are :) But the idea is very much that people sell something in order to make money
Will people make money through rebates from the local council? no - at least, not in this puzzle
Or just generate more income in the local shops/hotels/restaurants/pubs etc? nothing like this

Okay so this thing is more to do with the construction of something? sort of relating to entertainment of some description? and will be there for a couple of months until the work is completed? then people will have to pay for what has resulted from the availability of this thing?

Okay so this thing is more to do with the construction of something? precisely so sort of relating to entertainment of some description? yes and will be there for a couple of months until the work is completed? yes - but "there" is not a physical location; this "thing" will be available until the work is completed then people will have to pay for what has resulted from the availability of this thing? yes, but this does not matter all that much

Is this thing some sort of disguise for the construction? is it a map? not anything like this. It is, if you will, a "proverbial" or at any rate an "idiomatic" thing...

Would this thing usually be present when something is being constructed? Is it the result of the construction that people were not expecting? or the availabilty of this thing?

Is "tinking" a clue or a mis-spelling? Anything to do with Tinkerbell, as in Peter Pan?
Is Dartington Crystal involved?
Or Nelson's flagship, The Victory?

Would the phrase "money for old rope" be anywhere close? very close indeed - well done :)

***** SPOILER *****

Across the wires the electric message came:

A search is on to find 13 miles of old rope to rig a replica of Horatio Nelson's warship HMS Victory which is to be set on fire for charity.

The Torrington Cavaliers are building a half-size replica of the wooden warship in north Devon to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

The mock Victory will have 100ft (30m) masts, cross trees and reefed sails, which all need rope.

The charity hopes to raise £57,000 when the ship goes up in flames in August.

Chris Stacey, chairman of the Torrington Cavaliers, says the group is desperately short of rope.

"We will take any size of rope and can make what we need by splicing it," he said, adding that the original warship was rigged with about 26 miles of rope.

As a result, the Torrington Cavaliers are now shelling out hard cash for ancient pieces of rope - though most people, of course, are donating the stuff for nothing, since it is a charitable effort after all.

The phrase "money for old rope" is a common idiom - at least in English; figuratively, it just refers to payment for very easy work, or for some worthless thing. But money for old rope is literally - for now - available in Devon.

Congratulations to Trixie, thanks to all who joined in.

What a waste of time and money! First Channel 5, then the introduction of the internet and now a load of old rope! Poor poor Devon! :(
