Did someone literally wash some money in any way?
If so, was the money damaged by this? or did it smell of soap? and therefore it was deduced that the money had been "laundered"?

Maybe so, but I can't see it for the trees
Is the pun on "money laundering"? or something else?
Was someone assured that the money was "clean"?

Is actual illegal money laundering suspected to have been done? If so, is the method suspected to have been used relevant?
The peripherally involved police brilliantly deduced something? about illegal money laundering? about money washing? about the suspected criminals? about Hector?

Did they deduce two things? or one thing that can be understood in two ways?
Was Hector involved in any way with illegal money laundering? or with money washing? did he do or say something that resulted in the deduction being made?
Did they deduce that money laundering in general was happening?
Did they deduce that some specific money had been laundered?

Did they deduce that money laundering in general was happening? no, not really
Did they deduce that some specific money had been laundered? yes, indeed, for svv of "had been"

So Hector found some evidence that money was being laundered? but he didn't make the connection himself?
Did he catch someone trying to launder money? in a washing machine? Is an actual washing machine involved?

***** SPOILER *****

From a BBC News report sometime in February:

Don Bullman, 30, a chef, was arraigned on a charge of membership in the outlawed IRA.

Police Chief Superintendent Phillip Kelly testified that detectives trailed Bullman to a rendezvous Wednesday with two suspected IRA members in a parking lot beside Dublin’s Heuston train station. He said officers found about $22,000 in euro notes hidden in a detergent box in a backpack, as “part of a money-laundering operation on behalf of the IRA.”

Brilliantly deduced. Well done Tony, and the Irish police.
