Is it simply that Mark likes these birds and he would be happier if there were more of them?

I have a feeling that there is a little more to it than that though :)

Does Mark have a relevant hobby?

Would the loss of something contribute to there being more birds?
Would the increase of something contribute to there being more birds?
Noise relevant?
