another really famous street? No, I don't think that most people would call it famous. At least it's not as well known as Broadway or Wall Street.
wall street? No

is it relevant to find out the name of the street? The actual name of the street isn't particularly relevant, but OTRT

or is it an area of manhatten that is even more important? grenwich village This? soho? (my manhatten geography is nonexistant, so if these places aren't even in manhatten, forgive me!) That's ok, not needed to solve
chinatown?

Minor blooper:

is it relevant to find out the name of the street?
Best if I just say Yope - I don't want to mislead.

Quote:

Did he confuse the numbered streets with the numbered avenues? No, but somewhat OTRT in general - explore!

Hmmm. Did he confuse a "St." with an "Ave."? Did he neglect to find out if he was looking for North vs. South or East vs. West?

Was he possibly lost because he was unaware of how far it is between two points?

Bleeker Street?

Minor hint:
The original puzzle statement is something you might read in a tourist's guide book, written with a sense of humor.
Don't worry about Fred too much, he will eventually find his way; it's all part of the fun.

Does the name "Carnegie Mellon" have anything to do with this? Very good thinking! But no. Actually, assuming that the puzzle title prompted your question, let me say that the oblique connection to the puzzle is already uncovered by what is known so far. Perhaps this connection might be a bit obscure, especially for people outside the US.

Hint for title connection:
What is a nickname for this city?
