are there other varieties of the thing that normally do require tolls? is it something that would typically be used temporarily? not become a permanent posession? does one pay for this thing in some other way? is the reason for assuming toll-free because of a difference in capabilities? quality? physical characteristics? because of who was offering it? |

dryman (Dryman) on Sunday, October 02, 2005 - 05:02 pm: does it involve communication? media? transportation? this one lodging? and none of the others does it do something physical? insomuch as it "does" something, yes, that would be something physical would you normally rent the thing for a period of time? no make a payment per use? yes sign up for some sort of plan? possibly; but this would ordinarily be a variant of paying per use cell phone? no BBC license fee involved? no, although non-payment of same is apparently the crime that accounts for more British women in prison than any other |

do we assume it's toll free because there are no toll plazas on it? because of where it is located? because of who paid for the construction? because of its status as a tourist attraction or historical landmark? |

Jennifer (Tigger32382) on Wednesday, October 05, 2005 - 03:46 pm: do we assume it's toll free because there are no toll plazas on it? not really; it would be more true to say that we can assume that there are no toll plazas because we are sure that it is toll free because of where it is located? no because of who paid for the construction? no because of its status as a tourist attraction or historical landmark? no By The Undertaker (Undertaker) on Wednesday, October 05, 2005 - 08:44 pm: Would you assume it to be toll free, as the 'place' on the other side is not a desirable place to be? no |

when you said this would be used temporarily, did you mean that the bridge is only a temporary bridge built until it can be replaced? or is it meaning that people are only on the bridge temporarily? was there some sort of natural disaster? did the bridge have to cover up a rockslide or a flooded area or something like that? |

Does it lead to a cemetery and it would be the height of insensitivity to charge for travelling over it? unless to prove that death and taxes are the only things you can't avoid. |

Or perhaps there is a tax office at the other end, and like the congestion charge office in London which is placed just outside the charging zone, they won't charge their employees to go to work? |

Yesish to a footbridge...is it a bridge primarily for something other than people to cross? (Like the overpasses that were alledgedly built over the Alaska Pipeline so that the reindeer's migration paths weren't blocked?) |

The seven-metre (23-foot) high cable bridge attached to two trees spans a road that divides a large park in the town of Sokolov in the west of the country, near the German border. "We think this construction is unique in the world. I myself witnessed two dead squirrels on the road in the space of two months and I felt we had to do something," Sokolov mayor Karel Jakobec told AFP Thursday. At the moment the park is home to just three squirrels. "The idea is that instead of going down trees and crossing the road to get to the other side of the park the squirrels will go up and across. But we don't know yet if it will work," he added. Squirrels are a protected species in the Czech Republic. I assumed that the bridge would be toll free because squirrels might not understand, or indeed approve of, the concept of paying to go over a bridge, and would be very unlikely to have any money on them...though they could, conceivably, pay in nuts...hence the title. |
