pale? No. is it a synonym for weak? Yesish. puny? No.
does it refer to some type of disability? Possibly. handicap? Possibly a condition that someone is born with? Possibly a learned behavior? No. a negative behavior that someone would pick up by watching others? No. an annoying habit? No.
just had another thought...does the word refer to a kind of disease or sickness? More general. You're so close though, it's making me squirm in my seat. something that someone with a careless type of lifestyle would have? Could. or does it possibly refer to some kind of drug, or illegal substance? Possibly, not really |

is the word another that can be used as either an adjective or a verb, like 'limp'?
would it be used to describe someone who is fat? thin? old? young? socially inept? a nerd? |

If not...
is the word another that can be used as either an adjective or a verb, like 'limp'? All definitions for this four-letter word are adjectives. would it be used to describe someone who is fat? thin? old? young? socially inept? a nerd? It could apply to all of the above. No discrimination towards gender either.

is it the type of word that you could look at someone and know that it was fitting for them (like if a fat person had on a hat that read "fat")?
or is it something you'd have to find out about someone by talking to that person (like "dumb" or "lazy")? |

or is it something you'd have to find out about someone by talking to that person (like "dumb" or "lazy")? Sometimes. Not the sort of word you're thinking of though.
wimp? No. Not this sort of word. Keep in mind the most common use is not meant to be deragatory. |

yes, but how to check... surely we can't search all four letter adjectives with 11 entries (wouldn't it be helpful if dictionary.com had such a feature?) obviously it is a word with multiple meanings, but my mind is just blanking right now! |

The 11 entries clue won't help you much, given that they have oddball definitions that most people haven't heard of. This is a very common word. Focus on the clues where I said you were going the right direction or I was "squirming in my seat." Seriously. You guys were so close. |

I've just encountered the perfect christmas gift for a couple people in my life. And quite possibly a couple people in your life too. What is it?
The item is a tan baseball cap with the logo "SICK" on it.
One of my co-workers went to a robotics safety conference and met with a bunch of vendors, to include a company that produces sensors that let a robot know when it has left its boundries and that it should stop. The company is called SICK, named after its German founder, Dr. Sick. They were handing out these hats and my co-worker brought home six of them to share with us.
The people in my life include my two best friends and my dad. My dad is a doctor at the local army hospital. One of my best friends has random health problems and is perpetually in and out of hospitals. The other friend simply has a perverted mind at times, or is just plain "sick." I thought it would be very amusing if any one of those three wore the cap to work. I wonder who I'll give it to... } |

In case anybody was wondering, the title vaguely relates to the puzzle like so: Would you be inclined to stand near somebody wearing a hat that said "Sick" on it? Seems like a fast way to get "a little personal space" in this hectic world to me. |

Yeah, the title makes perfect sense when you think about what the hat says. This occured to me when you said we were 'close' with disease, but more general than that. It makes for a great puzzle when the leap from the title to the spoiler is short, but it takes a looonnnnggg route to get there... |

I'm not sure. They've all got that slight tinge of morbidity to their sense of humor, so I could see all of them doing it. Except Dad. He was raised in a traditional sort of way where you take off your hats indoors. So he'd take off the hat as soon as he walked into the hospital. :-) The second works in food service, so that might be a bit odd... or perhaps even diminish tips. So, that leaves the third...? |
