Had it not been for the flowers I might not have thought twice about them.

Is it relevant that the puzzle statement has the word 'flowers' formatted to show as purple?

Are they purple flowers?

Are they real flowers? representations of flowers?

Did you see the flowers? smell the flowers? did someone tell you that there were flowers?

Did the flowers remind you of something? someone?

'them' - is this people? objects?
tangible? intangible?

you might not have thought twice about them... as in, you might not have thought about 'them' in any depth? Or thought about them on 2 occasions?

did you deem the situation strange, in that you would not expect that group of people to be associated with flowers. e.g. four punk rockers holding bouquets of purple flowers.

Does the 'them' apply to people holding purple flowers? Or is one person holding flowers?
Is the type of flower relevant? Or just that they're purple?
Did seeing the flowers make you remember something? Curious about something? Afraid? Happy? Sad?

You say you didn't know 'them' prior to seeing the flowers... were they famous? Had you seen them on the news? Just people you'd heard of? People you saw shortly after seeing the flowers?
Is it relevant that purple is considered a regal colour?

So... the flowers caught your attention? Made you stop and pay attention to the person holding them? Were you looking for the person/persons specifically? Or did you happen to know them and wouldn't have seen them otherwise, since you weren't looking for them specifically?

So... the flowers caught your attention? yes Made you stop and pay attention to the person holding them? no, the person holding them is irrelevant Were you looking for the person/persons specifically? no Or did you happen to know them and wouldn't have seen them otherwise, since you weren't looking for them specifically? did you mean the them holding the flowers? they are irrelevant. if you mean the "them" of the puzzle, i wasn't looking for them, didn't know them, and wouldn't have given them a second thought without the purple flowers (which someone else was holding)

Is the following correct:
  1. You saw the violets.
  2. Someone was holding the flowers.
  3. You noted the violets for some reason (e. g. they were pretty).
  4. You saw "them."
  5. You thought again about "them."
  6. They were not purple.
  7. They were not holding flowers.
Is it relevant why the person was holding the flowers? Were "them" doing something in particular? Were they going to encounter the person holding the violets in the immediate future? Was your second thought about what would happen when "them" encountered the flowers? The flower seller? Hare Krishna relevant?

4. You saw "them."
5. You thought again about "them."

7. They were not holding flowers. yes to all (but being pretty isn't the reason I noted the purple flowers)

Is it relevant why the person was holding the flowers? no Were "them" doing something in particular? not "doing" exactly, but explore... Were they going to encounter the person holding the violets in the immediate future? no Was your second thought about what would happen when "them" encountered the flowers? The flower seller? Hare Krishna relevant? no to all these
