CORRECTION

The following q's from earlier should have been answered a bit differently, so read below before you continue:

"Did any of them WANT coffee in the first place? No"
>Actually, I should have asked for a rephrase of this q, because it's not a true statement to say that none of them wanted the coffee in the first place

"Were they ever intending to drink coffee? No - good q"
>This I also should have asked to be rephrased, because it's only accurate to say that some of them never intended to drink the coffee

Sorry for the confusion, now on with the puzzle...

I think Ix was asking if getting the coffee was a means of obtaining the cups rather than getting a beverage...

Any scientific experimentation relevant here?

That's what I meant, yes. Did the men need the cups, and the only way they could get them was to get coffee? Oh, ok, I see now - they didn't just need the cups, they needed to each have a cup with coffee in it

So... did they need to appear to be "paying customers" in order to remain in this establishment? So they bought/were given some cups of coffee so they wouldn't have to leave right away?

Will they be prosecuted for not paying? Does anyone care they did not pay? Are they allowed to not pay? By a company? By the governement? By the establishment that sold it?

Okay...this is driving me batty. SO:

AL, BOB, and CARL are sitting at a table. DON comes over with some coffee. Say, AL leaves with DON. BOB says, "Man, I can't stand coffee.". CARL says "Me either,". Everyone amenable to that?

Okay - moving forward:

Did AL want the coffee?
BOB?
CARL?
DON?

Will AL get rid of his coffee?
BOB?
CARL?
DON?

Will AL drink his coffee?
BOB?
CARL?
DON?
