Sure, Barb, until someone thinks of a reason why we shouldn't, let's keep the sombrero pattern consistent with the blocks that match, and just alter the location of the red and black blocks.

I forget most of the details, so i'll let those that have more accurate cranial access to the nuts and bolts, but I wonder if spectral lines (absorption?) and/or color combinations are relevant here.... I seem to recall that when you shine different colors of light, they sometimes produce different colors when they overlap than you would by mixing the same colors of pigments...

Hey, who says we have to use all seven blocks?

Try starting at the leftmost depression: blue, pink, green, yellow, white
If nothing, move the blocks in this order to the right by one block each.
If nothing, move the whole set in order one more depression to the right.
Anything yet?

Is there any one color stripe on the sombrero that appears to be thicker (wider) than the others? Thinner/narrower?

There is no red or black on the hat... trying that combo... nothing happens

The colours almost look like snooker balls, but the brown would be missing.

Try these:
white, red, yellow, green, blue, pink, black
red, yellow, green, blue, pink, black, white
red, yellow, green, white, blue, pink, black
red, yellow, green, some of the brown sugar, blue, pink, black

Anything?

Is there any one color stripe on the sombrero that appears to be thicker (wider) than the others? Thinner/narrower? Nope... Hey! A gust of wind (from where?!?) just swept through the room and blew my sombrero off my head. It disappeared up through a hole in the ceiling, which closed back over as soon as the sombrero went through.

The colours almost look like snooker balls, but the brown would be missing.

Try these:
white, red, yellow, green, blue, pink, black
red, yellow, green, blue, pink, black, white
red, yellow, green, white, blue, pink, black
red, yellow, green, some of the brown sugar, blue, pink, black

Anything? No, but your brown sugar suggestion gets creativity points!

Is there anything under either of the carts? Nope. The only thing special about the carts is that little phrase "Hecho en México

I'm holding off on Trav's next adventure until this one is solved...one of these puzzles at a time is plenty!

Try:
Green-White-Red-Yellow-Blue-Pink-Black
Pink-Green-White-Red-Yellow-Blue-Black
Blue-Yellow-Green-White-Red-Black-Pink
Black-Blue-Pink-Green-White-Red-Yellow
Yellow-Pink-Blue-Black-Green-White-Red

anything yet?

Try:
Green-White-Red-Yellow-Blue-Pink-Black
Pink-Green-White-Red-Yellow-Blue-Black
Blue-Yellow-Green-White-Red-Black-Pink
Black-Blue-Pink-Green-White-Red-Yellow
Yellow-Pink-Blue-Black-Green-White-Red

anything yet? No... that last combination gave me a faint whirring sound when I placed the yellow block down, but it went away as soon as we put the pink one down... I wonder what kind of order we are supposed to put these blocks in?!?

Ok - put the yellow one in only. Hear the whirring?
If so, put in the blue block next to yellow and listen...anything? If nothing, take out the blue and put in black - anything? If not, replace black with green - anything? If not, replace green with red - anything? If not, replace red with white - anything?

Ok - put the yellow one in only. Hear the whirring? yes, faintly
If so, put in the blue block next to yellow and listen...anything? yes, I actually do! If nothing, take out the blue and put in black - anything? If not, replace black with green - anything? If not, replace green with red - anything? If not, replace red with white - anything?

Hmm... yellow, then blue... this process could probably go more quickly if we could figure out what order they were being placed in - I highly doubt it's random

I don't think it's random either, but every idea I've had for a pattern has been shot down, so...

Try green next.
If nothing pink.
If nothing black.
If nothing red.
If nothing white.

If nothing pink.
If nothing black.
If nothing red.
If nothing white. The white one finally works!!!

My mom (who reads these puzzles but does not post) had a suggestions that we try yellow, white, red, pink, green, blue, black. While this did not work, her suggestion is along the right idea...

Ok, repeat the trial and error process.
Try the green.
If nothing, pink.
If nothing, black.
If nothing, red.

Whichever one works, leave it in and try the remaining three, in the next slot.
