just to remind us, how long did she take at her locker - 5 minutes?
Was she doing anything other than looking for her sheet music?
Is there anything else relevant inside the locker?
Did she have many different examples of sheet music in the locker? |

The question is, why did it take her 5 minutes rather than a few moments. If she had done her homework would it still have taken her 5 minutes? |

If she had been given a totally different piece for homework - everything else in the situation the same - would the outcome (Sarah sent home) have been the same? |

Was she doing anything RELEVANT, other than looking for her sheet music?
Would she have done this "something else" if she had done her homework?
Was the sheet music simply laying there / easy to see / waiting to be picked up?
Was she trying to memorise the music / play the tune in her head? |

Would it have still taken 5 minutes?
Would it have taken 4 minutes 3 mins etc?
Even though it might mislead, I don't seem to have any other leads. Are there any other leads? I 'll pursue for now and see where it in fact leads..
This thing she was doing, was it:
a mental exercise?
a physical exercise (with her hands)?
did it involve the locker?
did it involve anyone else?
Anything else in the locker relevant? |

Would it have taken 4 minutes 3 mins etc? only a few moments - probably less than 1 minute
Even though it might mislead, I don't seem to have any other leads. Are there any other leads? there is a relevant fact that was discovered not too long ago, but not followed up on I 'll pursue for now and see where it in fact leads..

Thanks for reminding us that there have been neglected leads.
Tony knew that the sheet music had been languishing in the locker all week and there was a combination lock.
Did the sheet music have instructions on it to inform her that the combination lock would change in the coming week?
If not the above, can we assume that the 5 minute delay at the locker was down to unlocking the locker?
The combination was new?
Sarah has a poor memory and needs to be reminded frequently as to what her combination is? |

Did Sarah rely on having the combination written down no, but in retrospect, your previous guess was really close enough for me to declare a

Sarah is a university student taking piano lessons from Tony. Sarah does not have a piano of her own, which means that every time she wants to practise, she must go to the universiity music building (the same building in which she takes her lessons) and use one of the practice rooms there. Since she only ever needs her sheet music in the music building, she keeps it in a locker, which happens to be quite close to Tony's office. This locker is locked with a combination lock.
On this occasion, Sarah went for a whole week without practising (and therefore a whole week without opening her locker at all) and managed to temporarily forget her locker combination, and it took her several minutes to remember it. While Tony was sitting in his office waiting for Sarah to come for her lesson, he heard her fumbling with her locker, and correctly guessed what was going on. When she arrived at his office five minutes late, he told her that there was no point in having a lesson that week, since she had obviously not practised at all.
This is based on a true story. Fortunately, my locker was far enough from my teacher's office that she never found me out.
