A French-Portugese couple visiting my parents in New York in the 1970's got the impression that America was a much more religious country than it actually was. How come? | ||

Did they see lots of religious icons everywhere? Is this a town with a church on every corner (like Salt Lake City)? Are you referring to New York, New York? Were there lots of protests going on? Anything to do with a political contraversy? Any major publicity stunts happening then? | ||

the thing they saw - was it writing? was it a kind of building? a sign? a road sign? did they see a symbol they mistook for a religious symbol? was it an advert? is there a particular relevant word here? is it relevant which religion they thought was common? christianity? could this only happen in America? could it happen in the UK? | ||

"Is that a religious organization?" they asked.It was S&H green stamps, trading stamps some stores gave in the mid-twentieth century that could be redeemed for various goods.
