is she supposed to leave some sort of sign f she leaves the building? does she? is she then supposed to leave some sort of sign that she has re-entered the building? and that is what she fails to do?
should we now just be trying to work out what the 'sign' is?
is it telling someone? some sort of written sign? a visual signal? like one of those sliding notices with 'in' and 'out' on them?

just to make sure; basically she does something wich would cause others not to know she is in her room and thus not attempt to rescue her in an emergency?

Is this the only way she potentionally endangers herself? would this be true for any emergency not just fire?

does she fail to allow an individual to know where she is? do something to cause people to think she isn't in her room when she is? fail to do something to make people think she is in her room when she is? intentionally trick someone into thinking she is somewhere else?

Is there some sort of "system" in the house so you can see which rooms are currently occupied and which are not? and she somehow "works around" that system?

Whatever she does (making it not known she is sleeping in her room) - she does it intentionally? because she doesn't want anyone to know she's there? or a specific person (and that noone else will know it is just a necessary side effect)? someone she doesn't like? someone that's "stalking" her? a previous boyfriend? some authority?

Is she covering/blocking a window? Peephole? Other opening?

Confirming: it is not a device like a mailbox flag or a sign-in sheet or a time clock, right (sorry for the negative question)?

Does she leave/turn a light off? Dim/cover a light? Read under the covers with a flashlight?

Do they see someone else they think is her?

****** SPOILER *************
Clytie resents her dorm's frequent fire drills & hates to go out in the cold at night. So when she hears the fire alarm, she ignores it, & stays in her room, letting the authorities assume she's not in her dorm at all, as this school, in some ways liberal, has either no curfew or a very late one. Thanks for sticking with it, everyone, & for solving it, John, & I'm sure you know what awaits you at the bottom of the page
