Ok, they wear the equipment but not on their shirt area. On their head? Legs? Feet? |

Drew and Lynne, does monitoring equipment cause them to to do something else which in turn results in the the loose clothing? YES does the monitoring equipment montor something about the pilots physical being? for sake of keeping him healthy/alive? his heart rate? NO is the way the equipment is worn important? where it is worn? the fact that it is worn for long periods of time? YES Ok, they wear the equipment but not on their shirt area. On their head? Legs? Feet? HEAD |

do pilots need to keep there head shaved or otherwise have hair, mustache, or beared in a specific way due to the monitoring equipment which leads to the clothing choice? |

Do they wear their goggles in bed necessitating a shirt with a larger neck size for when they wish to dress or undress without undoing the shirt buttons? |

does the monitoring equipment monitor: their vital signs (for stress analysis, etc.)? their physical location? how many times a day they visit lateralpuzzles.com? |

Lewis, does the monitoring equipment monitor: their vital signs (for stress analysis, etc.)? I DON'T THINK SO their physical location? I DON'T THINK SO how many times a day they visit lateralpuzzles.com? DEFINITELY NOT DON'T THINK IN TERMS OF MONITORING. THINK IN OTHER TERMS ABOUT FIGHTER PIOTS. |

Does this have to do with the fact that the fighter pilots are [or may be] subject to extreme G-forces or other forces? |

is the monitoring equipment the equipment that the pilot uses to monitor his surroundings, rather than the equipment monitoring him? Is it the equipment built into his helmet? So, rather than thinking about "monitoring", we could just think "equipment"? parachutes relevant? |

You say "generally": do some pilots then not wear larger shirts than the mechanics? Do the pilots choose to wear larger size shirts or do they have no choice in the matter? Is the "monitoring equipment" their sunglasses? (Raybans?) Long shot: do male and female pilots all have to wear the same shirt, the size of which might be dictated (as in the UK) by neck-circumference and, since the female pilots would presumably have somewhat larger breasts/pectorals than the male pilots =), the shirts all have had to be made larger to accommodate the extra? |

Do those pilots who do not wear a larger shirt do something else to accomodate the situation which leads to the others wearing larger shirts? Do they (non-larger-shirt-types) have some physical feature in common which obviates the need for a larger shirt? Is there equipment which interfaces with the shirt in some way to cause the size increase? Does it touch the shirt? The torso? The arms? The neck? Do they only wear larger shirts for flying? Do they wear larger mess dress shirts? Medals relevant? Rank insignia? Is the possibility of being captured relevant? |

Do they wear larger shirts to accomodate the equipment when flying? And on the ground because they have to be in constant readiness to fly out in an emergency? And a smaller shirt will come in the way of the equipment and would waste time? |

Is ease of putting on/taking off shirts relevant? Would Air Force pilots wear larger shirts than non-pilots even in situations completely unrelated to the Air Force - eg., when going out with friends at home? We've established that the equipment is part of the helmet - right? Do we need to know anything else about it? Its size? Function? Where exactly on the helmet it is? Would Air Force pilots also wear larger sweaters than non-pilots? Larger t-shirts? Are buttons relevant? |

Is it relevant that shirts open at the front? (unlike T-shirts and sweaters...) Do Air Force pilots wear larger jackets than non-pilots? Is it relevant that shirts have collars? Is neck size relevant? Do Air Force pilots have thicker necks because of the weight of some equipment they have to carry round on the helmet? |

is it actual size, or simply the size "designation" on the shirt tag that is different? Are the shirts made of different fabrics? In different styles? |

I'm not sure I understand what's left here.... Air Force pilots have thicker necks than non-pilots because, whilst flying(?) they wear some sort of equipment on their head. Right so far? Do we need to figure out why pilots wear this equipment and non-pilots don't? |

John ***** SPOILER ****** Air Force pilots have thicker necks than non-pilots because, whilst flying(?) they wear some sort of equipment on their head. Right so far? OK. I will put this one out of its misery. Air force pilots wear heavy helmets on their heads while flying. Over a period this builds up their neck muscles giving them bigger necks. Since shirt sizes are determined by neck size it follows that they end up wearing bigger shirts than other people. |
