Ok, so we are still talking about smileys, transcribed or otherwise? Here on the LTPF, we have two forms of smileys; those that are intercepted by the forum software and "transcribed" into a bitmap, i.e. , and those that aren't (which I prefer) i.e. (:, Is this the kind of transcription we're talking about here? |

Are we specifically talking about the smiley that goes : ( without the space between the : and the (? And it should be transcribed in some way? Or it is itself a transcription from something else? And we need to find out what that something else is? |

Mine would be happy? Because I'm Norwegian? Scandinavian? Such a nice person? Such a conceited person? |

Well that's how they would be 'miserable', yes And it should be transcribed in some way? Or it is itself a transcription from something else? And we need to find out what that something else is? I'm not sure what you mean. I think you need to find out more about the medium By Torgeir Apeland (Abc) on Saturday, February 11, 2006 - 08:07 pm: Mine would be happy? Well your preferred ones would be happy Because I'm Norwegian? Scandinavian? Such a nice person? Such a conceited person? Of course! Although, actually none of these are relevant to this particular puzzle |

Well, I mean, does one start with the : ( smiley, transcribe it, and end up with something else? Or does one transcribe something else and end up with : (? |

This is most singular. It seems to be much like what happens when I try making food in the kitchen (which, admittedly, does not happen often). And you try to create the smiley by forming it in some material? Such as, paper and pencil, clay, wood, or whatever? Is the LTPF relevant? Is this very puzzle relevant (apart from the fact that it is the puzzle being under attack for the moment)? |

You could use a pencil and another object, wood, but paper and clay wouldn't work Is the LTPF relevant? Well our dinner is burning as I type Nice to know that you have your priorities right! (: If one were to use a pencil, would one draw/write with it? Or use it as part of a figure? "Another object" - important to find out what that would be? Could it be different things? Would a dinner table made of wood do? A computer mause made of wood? |

Are you telling me there are people who make a living creating transcribed smileys? The world is even sicker than I thought. So you wouldn't draw anything on the table with the pencil? Is the pencil itself part of the finished product? Is the table part of the finished product? Is this some work of "emperor's new clothes"-type modern art (like when you come from the grocer's with a plastic bag of groceries, and decide to visit the local art gallery on the way home. You place the groceries in a corner before walking off to look at the art. When you come back, your bag of groceries has just received 1st price for creativity and contemporary satire, and you're offered £1000000 for it.)? Will there be woodchips around after the work is finished, but before one has tidied up? If so, from the table? From the pencil? |

Is this some way of indicating that one is miserable? Is it something akin to lifting your arms and waving your index and middle fingers to indicate quotes and/or irony (not sure if this is a common thing outside Norway")? |

No - the smilies would just be a small part of the whole Is it something akin to lifting your arms and waving your index and middle fingers to indicate quotes and/or irony (not sure if this is a common thing outside Norway")? I've just done it, and yes it is common outside Norway, but I wish I'd shut the curtains! No, it's nothing to do with this |

| | Posted on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 12:53 pm: | |
So I need something in addition to the table and the pencil, then. Air? Gravity? A floor? Are the smilies temporary? How would I use the table - would I move it? Stand on it? Place something on it? Move the pencil - in a particular pattern? Would the pencil touch anything while being moved? Could this be done in complete darkness, given sufficient "inner eye" imagination and body coordination? |

You've pretty much got this so... ************* SPOILER ****************** If the current habit common in electronic communication of using smileys to express emotion were to catch on in the Morse code world, all the smileys produced as above would be miserable. As I understand it, Morse code only has one 'bracket' and it depends on whether there are any previously as to whether it is interpreted as a ( or a ). Unless the smiley appears within a bracketed phrase, or unless produced as (: all smileys will be interpreted as |
