Would it involve getting the hens to roll around not "roll around", but the idea is certainly that the hens should become coated with... in butter ...this one or oil?

Excellent question :) Now we're cooking with gas...

Is the idea of "self-basting" relevant? no - the idea is very much that humans have to apply butter to hens

getting the hens to churn the butter? no

Is the butter liquid when it is to be applied to the hens? Will the butter be applied to particular parts of the hen's body? Will it require the hens to do something in order to get the butter on their body?
Will it require them to eat butter? take a butter shower? :)
wild guess: is the helpful part of the description how to get hens to take a shower?

Is the butter liquid when it is to be applied to the hens? this is not specified Will the butter be applied to particular parts of the hen's body? and neither is this Will it require the hens to do something in order to get the butter on their body? no, but what the hen is doing will make it rather difficult to apply the butter
Will it require them to eat butter? no take a butter shower? no
wild guess: is the helpful part of the description how to get hens to take a shower? no - the description is not helpful in any way relating to hens or butter at all

So humans apply the butter to the hens?
While they are doing something else? Something they would normally have to do to hens? Do they get groomed? De-flead?

So humans apply the butter to the hens? exactly so - or at least, are instructed to do so
While they are doing something else? the hens? Yes, indeed. The humans? No. Something they would normally have to do to hens? Do they get groomed? De-flead? see above

Are they instructed to do so by people? A chef? Written instructions? In a recipe book? On packaging?

Are they instructed to do so by people? A chef? Written instructions? In a recipe book? On packaging? this is not an easy question to answer. The instructions were written by a person, who was not a chef, nor did he have anything to do with the catering industry.

Do the instructions include a machine which might be used to butter hens?

Is the trouble with the hens that they fly away?

Does the useful part of the description involve butter? or hens?

There has to be more than one hen, so Does it have to do with the hens interacting with eachother?

Would 10 hens be better than 2? Easier? Less useless?

Would 10 hens be better than 2? Easier? Less useless? the number of hens is not relevant, provided that it is greater than one

Does the answer to this puzzle have more to do with the words than the actual process (female and more than one just so that the word is "hens," etc.)?
