WizardofNZ is standing in the middle of a field in the pouring rain, surrounded by qualified doctors and lawyers. The owner of the field is relevant, but it is not owned by Wiz or any of the doctors or lawyers. There is no relevant building or construction to be put up on the land. It is not a cemetary. There are no sheep, I repeat, no sheep involved. |

Woodworm: Are they Hindus? Sikhs? Christians? Moslems? irrelevant Are they pursuing research of some kind? no When you say it would be obvious to an observer what was going on, can we assume that I would immediately solve the puzzle if I had been there? yes Did you talk to any of the people? yes Would you still have known what was going on if you had not talked to them? yes Were they working on behalf of the Indian government? no The NZ government? noDiplomatic or commercial relations between India and NZ relevant at all? no Have you ever visited India, and is this relevant (just a vague idea that you might have worked there and invited your colleagues back on an exchange of some sort)? no Ca va, we've established that Wizardofnz is the sole New Zealander in a winter pruning gang consisting predominantly of Indian immigrant labourers who were once doctors and lawyers. The one remaining question is: Why would these people give up their careers in India and seek horticultural employment in New Zealand? |

Bah, screw it, this puzzle deserves to be put out of its misery. You've established all the important details, anyway. ***** SPOILER ****** Wizardofnz is the sole New Zealander in a winter pruning gang consisting predominantly of Indian immigrant labourers who were once doctors and lawyers, having left the harsh conditions of their mother country for a cleaner, friendlier life in New Zealand. This is quite a common phenomenon - New Zealand is regularly bombarded with overqualified immigrant labourers who toil our fields, moving house with every change of season. |
