The bell which joins later:
a church bell?
an alarm bell?
a telephone bell?
a doorbell?
some small bell you can carry around in your hand?

Was the joining bell rang by someone inside the church? Is there a church service when the joining bell rings? Is Lucas' position inside the church relevant?

The other bells - churchbells, right? - do they announce the beginning of church service? the end of church service? some sort of alarm? the time? some other event? Were they being tested?

Did the person who was murdered by Lucas and the person seeking revenge related?
Is the second small bell some sort of evidence that will prove Lucas involvement in murder?
Is the revenge taker trying to scare Lucas by ringing bell?
Does ringing of second smal bell, a result of ringning of other larger bells?
Do other people know about the murder?
Is Lucas being tried outside the church for the murder?
Does the second ringing bell signifies that time of execution has arrived?
Am I asking too many absurd questions? :-)

Is the small bell attached to a door? Like a shop bell? a doorbell? Was it a bell that his father habitually rang to summon a servant? Was it the bell attached to a bellpull near his father's bed?

Ok, then, was the bellpull in his father's house? office? shop?

Did it summon assistance in general? a nurse? or other medical person? an employee? was it to summon Lucas?

Is the specific location of the bellpull relevant? is the location of the bell itself relevant? (for example, the bellpull is beside Lucas' father's chair in the study, and the bell itself is in the kitchen?)

Is the bellpull in a building? on the outside of a building? in an official building? in the city hall? at the town gates? in the town square? in another public place? on a vehicle?
Same questions for the bell?
Is the bell usually used to call someone? Is it used to get some specific person's (or some specific group's) attention? Is it used to get the public's attention? Is it used when Lucas' father comes to town? Does it signal for the streetfolk to make way for the Big Man's carriage?

Is the event being celebrated an annual event? Weekly? Daily? Monthly?
Is what the event is relevant except for the fact that it meant there were already bells ringing when Lucas heard the other bell?

Does this have to do with the old practice of having a bellpull in the coffin, so a buried person could ring it (and be rescued) if he turned out to be alive?

Is Lucas' father like a Pope?

In case the earlier post doesn't pan out:

Are the "many bells" different from the one that joined in? For example, they were funeral bells, while the joining bell was used by the father to signal that he was alive?

*************SPOILER************

The story took place in the 18th century. The bells were church bells and rang during the funeral of Lucas' father, the town's judge. He lew in one of these old-fashioned coffins which had a bell in case the decendent should come back back to live. Being keen on his money, Lucas had poisoned his father, but the poison was too weak: he woke up during the funeral and rang the bell. Lucas could be sure his father would sentence him to death.

Thanks everyone for playing. A new puzzle will follow soon...
