William was riding a bus home from work one chilly January evening. Because of something he heard during the bus ride that evening, he made a purchase the next day. That purchase made him a nice bit of money months later, and again the next year. He expected the first bit of profit, the second was a pleasant surprise. | ||

Exact identify of corporation relevant? True story? If not, could it conceivably happen in real life? (wild stab) do they manufacture vehicles? If not vehicles, is the stuff being manufactured bigger than a car? Smaller than car? Would a typical homeowner own one of these? Is ownership a relevant concept with regard to the stuff being manufactured? (a few more wild stabs) furniture? kitchen applicance? hygiene related items? | ||

But this is close enough, considering that you've got the rest of it. And then the next 4th of July Hawaii would have been added. As it was, indeed. 1959 in case anyone wanted to know (I looked it up ) *************SPOILER******************** On a cold January night in 1959, William sat on the Washington DC bus, heading for home. In the seat behind him he could hear two men (apparently the secretaries to a couple of congressmen) talking about the day's work. One of them mentioned that he was glad that the bill admitting Alaska as a state had passed that day. William, being a good lateral thinker, realized that this bit of news would mean that people and companies all over the US would need new flags come the Fourth of July, when the admission would actually take place. On his way to work the next morning, he stopped at a stockbroker and bought all the stock in flag companies that he could afford. Over the next five months, William's investment paid off handsomely as flag sales soared, and then, when Hawaii was admitted in 1960, it paid off again; a pleasant surprise. | ||
