William was riding a bus home from work one chilly January evening. Because of something he heard during the bus ride that evening, he made a purchase the next day. That purchase made him a nice bit of money months later, and again the next year. He expected the first bit of profit, the second was a pleasant surprise. |

January relevant? Riding a bus relevant? Was someone talking to him specifically? Did he overhear a conversation? Purchasing the item the "next day" versus that night relevant? The item he purchased: Tangible? Conceptual? Stocks? Bonds? Money Market? Real Estate? Jewelry? Fine Metals? Something you could buy at Walmart? Something you need to buy at a specialty shop? Does buying this item require a broker? The profit: Was the second bit of profit from the same source as the first bit of profit? (ie: Buying a box of french fries to sell the fries, but somehow selling the box afterwards too?) Was he mildly suprised? Overjoyed? Was the second profit larger than the first? Profit amount relevant? |

Endeffect January relevant? Yes Riding a bus relevant? Yes-ish. Was someone talking to him specifically? No Did he overhear a conversation? Yes Purchasing the item the "next day" versus that night relevant? Yes. The item he purchased: Tangible? Hmmm. Yope. Conceptual? Yope here, too. Stocks? Do you know this one? Yes. Bonds? Money Market? Real Estate? Jewelry? Fine Metals? Something you could buy at Walmart? Something you need to buy at a specialty shop? No to all these. Does buying this item require a broker? Yope The profit: Was the second bit of profit from the same source as the first bit of profit? (ie: Buying a box of french fries to sell the fries, but somehow selling the box afterwards too?) Yes to the concept, No to the example. Was he mildly suprised? Mildly? I think Yes. Overjoyed? Certainly happy. Found money is always nice, isn't it? Jumping up and down and shouting happy? probably not. Was the second profit larger than the first? Not relevant. Profit amount relevant? No. Haenlomal Hi Barbara. How have you been? Hi hon. Been busy. We moved, so much chaos ensued. It's mostly under control now, though. Title relevant? Vaguely related, but not necessary to getting the solution. |

Profit - from selling stocks at higher price than buying them? From - whassitcalled - dividend? Was the information he got directly about stocks ("I believe stock XYZ has excellent potential")? Information that more indirectly let him make an intelligent choice concerning what stock to buy into (All the best meteorologists agree that this summer will be hot and sunny, so we buy into Ice Cream & Bathing Suits Ltd.)? |

Torgeir Apeland (Abc) Profit - from selling stocks at higher price than buying them? No. From - whassitcalled - dividend? Yes, dividends Was the information he got directly about stocks ("I believe stock XYZ has excellent potential")? No. Information that more indirectly let him make an intelligent choice concerning what stock to buy into Yes, this one. And he had to make a lateral leap that many folks wouldn't see. (All the best meteorologists agree that this summer will be hot and sunny, so we buy into Ice Cream & Bathing Suits Ltd.)? Very much this idea, but not this straightforward. |

One on the guys who were talking in the bus was employed at the company? Both of them? Is there two of them at all? Relevant? The exact position in the company relevant? The director? Economist? He had heard that something was going to happen, so had waited till that happened and then bought the stocks - something along these lines? Did he know the exact moment when that will happen? Only approximate time? Did not know at all and bought the stocks by chance? |

Exact identify of corporation relevant? True story? If not, could it conceivably happen in real life? (wild stab) do they manufacture vehicles? If not vehicles, is the stuff being manufactured bigger than a car? Smaller than car? Would a typical homeowner own one of these? Is ownership a relevant concept with regard to the stuff being manufactured? (a few more wild stabs) furniture? kitchen applicance? hygiene related items? |

Bojan Basic One on the guys who were talking in the bus was employed at the company? No. Both of them? No. Is there two of them at all? Two men talking on the bus, yes. And William. Relevant? not particularly. The exact position in the company relevant? The director? Economist? FA here, but the position of one of the men William overheard is very relevant. He had heard that something was going to happen, This part is right, so had waited till that happened and then bought the stocks but this part is wrong. - something along these lines? Did he know the exact moment when that will happen? The exact moment? No. Only approximate time? But No to this, as well. Did not know at all and bought the stocks by chance? No, he bought the stock knowing for certain that the thing was going to happen. Haenlomal Well, at least that garage is now being put to good use! Yep. And this one doesn't leak, either! Hope you like you new digs. Oh, I do, I do. Manufacturing: Do they manufacture one kind of stuff? Multiple kinds of stuff? One kind of stuff. Exact identify of corporation relevant? Identity? No. Stuff manufactured? Yes. True story? I don't know. If not, could it conceivably happen in real life? It could very easily have, yes. (wild stab) do they manufacture vehicles? Wild stab futile, sorry, no. If not vehicles, is the stuff being manufactured bigger than a car? Smaller than car? Smaller than a car generally, but I suppose one could be bigger than a car... Would a typical homeowner own one of these? Very likely, as would others Is ownership a relevant concept with regard to the stuff being manufactured? Oh, Yes. (a few more wild stabs) furniture? kitchen applicance? hygiene related items? Don't hurt yourself with that knife. No, none of those. |

Since they gave out high dividends - was the stock company extremely successful in this business year? If yes: Did the demand for their products rise? Did a competitor for some reason not supply the market? Did they improve their product? Did they find a way to be able to sell cheaper? Did they invent a completely new product? |

Robin Smith Did he overhear the aquisition of Alska from the Russians? Not exactly. I doubt that the purchase was negotiated on a bus ... But this is close enough, considering that you've got the rest of it. And then the next 4th of July Hawaii would have been added. As it was, indeed. 1959 in case anyone wanted to know (I looked it up ) *************SPOILER******************** On a cold January night in 1959, William sat on the Washington DC bus, heading for home. In the seat behind him he could hear two men (apparently the secretaries to a couple of congressmen) talking about the day's work. One of them mentioned that he was glad that the bill admitting Alaska as a state had passed that day. William, being a good lateral thinker, realized that this bit of news would mean that people and companies all over the US would need new flags come the Fourth of July, when the admission would actually take place. On his way to work the next morning, he stopped at a stockbroker and bought all the stock in flag companies that he could afford. Over the next five months, William's investment paid off handsomely as flag sales soared, and then, when Hawaii was admitted in 1960, it paid off again; a pleasant surprise. |
