Well...is 'she' human?
"Given back" as in something was returned to her?
A person gave her back a list?
A person who 'she' had, at some point, given the list to?
Were any words spoken during the act of giving the list back to 'she'?

At this point the assumption is that there are two people mainly involved - the 'she' who was the recipient of the list, and someone else who gave it to her...is anyone else of any relevance involved?

Ok, Sally it is. So did Sally, at some point, compose a grocery list? If so, did she do it by writing a series of items on a piece of paper?
Is it important or helpful to know what exact words are on the list? Were there, in fact, words in the list? Or had she perhaps made a list with pictures?
If she had made a list of words, were the words spelled correctly?

Did Sally want to use the list as a shopping aid herself? Or for someone else to use as a shopping aid? Did Sally actually go shopping and use the list to confirm that she got what she needed?

Does person #2, who gave Sally the list back, know Sally personally? Is it a person that Sally has given lists to in the past? Is it someone Sally's same age?

Is the exchange of the list happening in Sally's home? In someone else's home? At some workplace/business? Indoors? Outdoors?

So did person 2 obtain the list by:
taking it from Sally directly? picking it up off the floor? removing it from some item of Sally's (like a purse, or her pocket)? Finding it somewhere?

When person 2 gave the list to Sally, was Sally surprised? Did she expect person 2 to give her the list? Or did Sally not even know that person 2 had the list?

So how much time passed between the time Sally gave person 2 the list and person 2 gave it back to her: a few seconds? few minutes? an hour? few hours? days? weeks? months? years?

So Sally gave person 2 the list? Person 2 accepted the list? Person 2 then realized that what Sally had given him/her was not what Person 2 needed to get from Sally? And Sally did not know she had given the wrong thing to Person 2? Sally gave something to Person 2 that had some other kind of information on it? Sally gave Person 2 a grocery list, but intended to give something else to Person 2? Sally was embarrassed only because she gave an item to Person 2 that she didn't intend to give to Person 2? Or was she embarrassed for another reason?

Did Sally embarrassment have anything to do with what was written on the paper that she gave Person 2? Or simply because she made a mistake and gave Person 2 the wrong item?

Did I get it right: Sally handed a grocery list to a second person and the spelling on this list was incorrect?
Was Sally embarrassed because of the bad spelling?
Is the place where this happens relevant (exept for the fact that it is not the grocery)? Is it a sort of shop? Is the second person related to this place?
Concerning the object that Sally intended to give to person 2, was it likewise a list of items? Was the spelling correct?

Is the spelling of words in this story relevant?
Is Sally embarrassed in the sense of unmasked? in the sense of confused?
Did this incident reveal something about Sally? something personal? something she wanted to keep secret?
Where did Sally meet the second person before: in the same place? elsewhere? both?
Did she give papers to this person before? Did she receive papers of this person before?
By the way, is Sally deaf, mute or blind?
Is the second person working at the location?
Is his profession relevant? A doctor?
Does the second person know that Sally is embarrassed?
(My idea: On the list is food that the doctor did not want Sally to eat)

This could be a source of embarrasment, if Sally goes into what she THINKS is a grocery store and gives what she THINKS is a grocery list to an employee, then finds out she's at the wrong place with the wrong list...

Has Sally given the list she intended to give to this person to someone at a grocery store? Is her sense of embarrassement less that she gave this person a grocery list, and more that if she still has the grocery list, then it means she gave her other list to someone else?

Ok, Sally gave the wrong list to someone at the grocery? Is this someone relevant? Did this someone get any information he was not supposed to get? About Sally? About her intentions?

Coming back to the occupation of the person who returned the list, is he in:
Sports?
entertainment?
a jailbird, criminal?

Coming back to the word embarrassed:
Sally is embarrassed
She is neither unmasked nor confused nor inhibited?
Is she put into difficulty?

Is the unknown list (the non-grocery list) a list of tangible objects? Of names (of people)? Of events? Of things she did? Would it be clear from glancing at the list's contents what exactly it was a list of?

Did we learn everything we need to know about Sally? Can she speak?

Is there anything criminally incriminating on the list? Morally?

On a wild limb, are any religious figures involved in this puzzle?

Ok, Sally gave the wrong list to someone at the grocery? Is this someone relevant?
Did this someone get any information he was not supposed to get? About Sally? yes to all
About her intentions? no

Coming back to the occupation of the person who returned the list, is he in:
Sports?
entertainment?
a jailbird, criminal?
nope, sorry. None of the above

Coming back to the word embarrassed:
Sally is embarrassed
She is neither unmasked So sorry!!! Gave wrong information(or brother did it for me) Yes, she felt unmasked nor confused nor inhibited?
Is she put into difficulty?no

Getting close, I think...
Was the list intended for a priest or other religious figurehead?
Is it a list of sins? (why i was wondering if she is unable to speak, perhaps she needed to give a Catholic priest a written list of her sins at confession)... along these lines close?
is it a list of sins or wrongdoings she committed? someone else had committed?

Well, I guess that Stuccosalt found it out:
When she got back the grocery list from a priest (or similar) she realized that she had given a list of her sins to someone at the grocery?
Is there more to find out?
Why did this someone at the grocery keep the list?
Perhaps, she rather put down the list at the grocery?

Spoiler
Sally gave the priest a list of what she thought was a list of sins. When the list was given back to her, she realized that what she had given the priest was her grocery list, and that she gave the grocer the list of her sins.

And that's the end!

So she needed a head of cabbage and some milk...and by the way, she also had angry thoughts about the guy that cut her off in traffic!

Nice puzzle.
