Though companies other than (though possibly including) shoe manufacturers? The loss affected companies literally in literally all industries. Stock market movements relevant as the source of loss? No, stocks were unaffected. |

So after this incident, there was a general drop in productivity because many people took time off work? Did they all stay home and follow the story on TV and in the papers? Since this was a famous shoe brand, I assume many people also owned a few pairs of these shoes? Did they spend their time playing sports instead of working, hoping that their shoe would break, and given the buzz surrounding this company, they would be able to claim compensation? Is this a true story, by the way? Is it Reebok? The soles of all my Reeboks have disintegrated... |

Martinfg (Martinfg): Was there an advertising campign to promote this type of shoe running at the time of the incident? No Jumpingjack (Jumpingjack): So after this incident, there was a general drop in productivity because many people took time off work? Yope - they didn't 'take time off' in the sense that they failed to show up at work. Did they all stay home and follow the story on TV and in the papers? No... Since this was a famous shoe brand, I assume many people also owned a few pairs of these shoes? Not terribly many, they're specialized (US football) shoes. Did they spend their time playing sports instead of working, hoping that their shoe would break, and given the buzz surrounding this company, they would be able to claim compensation? No, but interesting idea. Is this a true story, by the way? Fictionalized reality. Is it Reebok? The soles of all my Reeboks have disintegrated... Could be - suffice it to say it is a major brand of shoe. Nosleepboy (Nosleepboy): Was the work-loss because of a fantasy football league? BIG Yope - not "a" league... How about people talking about the incident? Could be some of this Was the player a professional football player? Yes Was the player a quarterback? A kicker? If no, offense? Defense? Offense, but not QB (thought he could've been to have had the same effect. Good questions, almost there... |

Jumpingjack (Jumpingjack): They all formed their own little leagues? What, US workers? Yopishly, but not in the literal sense... Did they fall down all over the place, thus destroying some of the equipment in their offices, factories etc? No. Nosleepboy (Nosleepboy): Were people at work not working because of many fantasy football leagues? Yes Looking up the story and developments on the internet? And yes again Looking up stats and managing their own fantasy teams online/in the office? A thousand times yes.. * * ** ***SPOILER*** ** * * One poorly made shoe cost U.S. businesses in all industries millions of dollars. Fantasy football is an enormous and growing phenomenon in the US wherein groups of regular Joe's draft football players to create their teams, then use real week-by-week stats the players compile to score points in games against other owners' fantasy teams. In this puzzle, a very high-profile US football player sustained a knee injury in a Monday Night Football game as the cleats (spikes) on his shoe snapped, causing his leg slide as he is tackled and his knee to bend awkwardly. The injury put him out for the season. The following Tuesday morning, fantasy football players across the country scrambled to their computers to check on his status, drop him from their teams, add his back-up to their teams, etc... all on work time. The accumulative loss of productivity/man-hours measured in the millions across the nation. If this link is still available, here's a study on the impact of fantasy football leagues on US industry in terms of productivity loss: http://tinyurl.com/lvryj. Thanks everyone for playing! |
