The FA assumption being that something of Mary herself saves Rita, as opposed to her death changing a situation that subsequently saves Rita.

If Mary, an insect, hadn't died, Rita wouldn't have survived. However, Mary's death by itself wasn't directly responsible for Rita's still being alive.

Do the insects have to be killed by humans / other manmade objects in order that Rita may be saved?

Or would their natural deaths save her - as long as there were none around when Rita would otherwise be in danger?

Was she in danger of being murdered but her murderer took time to kill Mary as she bothered him? Giving Rita a chance to escape?
Was a bees' nest disturbed?

Had Mary already died before Rita was attacked?
Had Rita already been attacked when Mary died? And somehow Mary's death saved her?
Did the murderer and Rita ever actually meet? Or did Mary's death prevent this?

Did Rita know her murderer?
Was she trying to escape him/her?
Or was she blissfully unaware of what would have happened?

So Mary stung the murderer and he didn't get to kill Rita YES- was Rita his ex wife? Could be Anything more of relevance? NO!!!

**************SPOILER******************
Rita was at home, unaware that her ex-husband was walking towards her house to kill her. When approaching her house, he was suddenly stung by a bee. He then started to hurry to a hospital, since he knew he was allergic to bee poison. He doesn't make it and dies of anaphylactic shock. Soon after the bee dies (every bee dies after stinging something/someone). So, if Mary hadn't died, Rita wouldn't have survived. And Rita will never know that. :-) CONGRATULATIONS, LYNNE!!!!! :-)

Actually, I should have started this with "Mary was dying and Rita decided to abbreviate her death. But Rita didn't know Mary had just saved her life. And she never will"
But then, the puzzle had already started and I couldn't just change it...
