RECAP Laura was going to be killed by Larry. John is another person involved in this story. John and Larry are colleagues and their occupations are relevant. Hurricane Fred was blowing not close enough to cause any harm to the three people of this story, but it was thanks to Fred and a mechanical failure that Laura survived. |

There may be some variations on this, but I think I have the basic idea. Fred was going to take Laura to the airport to catch a plane, but his car had a mechanical failure, which caused her to miss her flight. The plane then crashed and "thanks to Fred and a mechanical failure" she is still alive because she missed that flight and took another (which obviously DIDN'T crash). A variation on this might be that the plane she was SUPPOSED to get on had a mechanical failure and so it had to be worked on. A guy named Fred offers to let her take HIS seat on another plane that is leaving right then and he takes her spot, waiting for the plane to get fixed. Between the car problems and the plane problems I think/hope I have the gist of this. Good one! Blackhawk |

RECAP: Laura was an airplane pilot. She was kidnapped by Larry and John and kept in a remote place. After some days in captivity, Laura stayed alone with Larry, while John left to get the ransom. The money would be picked up at 10 p.m. While John was out, Larry's watch stopped working and he realized that he wouldn't know when it would be 10 p.m. However, after some time a solution for this problem was found. Thanks to this and hurricane Fred, Laura escaped her terrible fate. Consider: 1)They were near an airport where there was an airplane. 2) Laura was a pilot. 3) Hurricane Fred. Relevant issues: How Larry would know when it would be 10 p.m. Hurricane Fred's "role" in Laura's survival |

How Larry would know when it would be 10 p.m.: Was the plane involved in this? John? Laura? Would the puzzle work if Laura was not a pilot? If not: Would Larry and John have chosen another victim? Would she have been killed? Was John aware that the watch was broken? Has there more to be found out about John and the ransom? Was the plane flying during the time frame of the story? at 10 pm? Was the impact of the hurricane primarily on Laura? Larry? John? |

So the time frame of the puzzle doesn't include 10 pm? Did the puzzle happen before 10 pm? after? Or to put it in another way, did Larry think it was later than it actually was? earlier? So the plane was supposed to indicate Larry the time in a way? Was it the take off? landing? when the plane passed by? its sonic boom? Was the indication the plane gave visible? audible? tangible? Did Laura 'help' Larry? Did she knew the time schedule of the plane? Did she lie to Larry? Did anything go wrong with this plane method? Was the schedule changed in any way? If yes, was it due to the hurricane? |

Did Larry and Laura see something that was triggered by (the liftoff of) the plane? If yes, was it an object? something in the air? Was the heading (or the itinerary?) of the plane changed due to the hurricane? Were Larry and Laura aware that there was a hurricane? Did Laura give Larry information about: the take-off time? the itinerary? the type of the plane? more? Was Laura's information wrong due to the hurricane? |

***********SPOILER*************** Laura was a pilot of a cargo air company. Every single day, at 10 p.m., an airplane of that company took off from that small town. It was the only airplane that took off at night. One day, she was kidnapped by Larry and John. She was kept in a remote place about 5 km (3 mi) from the airport, exactly under the track of the airplanes when they took off from that airport. The airplanes almost always took off towards that place because the winds only blew from one direction in that region. After some days in captivity, she heard her kidnappers discussing how they would get the money. She heard John telling Larry that he would pick the money at 9:45 p.m., and that he would be back at 10 p.m. to release her. In case he wasn't back at 10 p.m., Larry should kill her and run away. Some time after John departed, Larry glanced at his watch and realized it had broken (stopped). He cursed and was desperate because he didn't know what to do, since he wouldn't know when it would be 10 p.m. Laura had an idea to save her life. She knew that the winds had shifted that day. Because of the hurricane, they were blowing from the opposite direction from the one they used to blow. And they were strong enough to make the airplane take-off in the opposite direction, but not enough to prevent it from taking-off. She then told him about the airplane which took off every night at 10 p.m., and passed exactly over that place. Since it was a cargo plane, there were usually no delays. She never mentioned, of course, that it wouldn't be passing over them that night because it would depart in the opposite direction. Being from that small town, Larry knew that all the things she was telling him was true, and trusted her. When it was 10 p.m., no airplane overflew them and Larry thought it wasn't 10 p.m. Which he didn't know was that the police had already arrested John and had made him tell where Laura was being held captive. The police then rushed towards Larry and Laura. At 10:15, the police arrived, Larry was arrested and Laura was freed. CONGRATULATIONS FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND PERSISTENCE IN THIS PUZZLE!!! |
