Well, I'm probably wrong... But here it goes! One possible explanation is that you own, say, a store. You raise the prices of your products. Although you get the same number of visitors, they buy less, so you get less money. Once you drop the prices, you make more money because the visitors buy more products than before. Do not try to get too bogged down with the military aspect it is relevant but the puzzle could work in certain other civilian situations... So they come on duty but they pay from their private money? Nah that will do time for a..... **********************SPOILER***************** The way the RAF works is that if you visit another station on business you stay in the relevant Mess, in this case the Senior NCO's Mess. Because you are on duty there is no charge for food or accomodation, however there is a small charge for service, (tea, coffee, cleaning, papers etc.) the individual is responsible for paying this out of their own pocket. The Main Mess committee (the first "we")are responsible for the general running of the Mess including setting the price for the service fee, which goes into our funds to be used as we see fit. This price had not been raised for a long time and was 48p. The desision was made to increase it to £1. The second "we" are the Mess Charities Committee which is a sub-committee of the main committee. We raise money for various local charites in a number of different ways, one of which are collection tins in the bars and on the reception desk where people pay their service charge. When the charge was 48p most people would pay with a 50p coin and rather than keep the change they would put it in our tin. When the price went to £1 they would pay with a £1 coin and there would be no change. We (the Charity Committee) brought it up at a meeting and We (the Main Committee) dropped the price by 5p, people still payed with £1 coins but put the 5p in the tin, meaning the charities gained over twice the amount from every visitior. I suppose being a member of both committees and a supposed lateral thinker it should have occured to me before we raised the price what would happen, but I didn't realise until the mess receptionist pointed out that the tins were taking much longer to fill.
