Verina said to her boss, "I have to take an indefinite leave of absence without pay. I can't tell you why, but you'll find out eventually, & you'll see that I was justified." She's right--& she's not sick or a spy or on any kind of secret government mission. This is based on a true story about the only person in the world who ever had this particular reason. What is it??

is it relevant that she takes an indefinite leave of absence rather than just quits her job? is it necessary that she remain 'employed'? or remains in her job role?

are any of these relevant about Verina:
her age? her religion? her physical appearance? her gender? her job? her education? her romantic relationships? her parents? her children? her hobbies? her pets? her race? her place of residence? her country of origin? the amount of money she has? the clothes she wears? where she goes on holiday? what she eats?

is she intending to go somewhere relevant? do something relevant? is she trying to avoid something? stop something bad happening? make something good happen?

is her motive selfish? altruistic? does she have a choice? will harm come to her if she does not do this? is money involved? will she gain financially from doing this? will anyone?

is she going to change some aspect of her life other than her work? is she going to do some alternative type of work?

is she going to create something?

does she do this in repsonse to something that happens to her? something that happened recently?

does she inherit something relevant? discover something?

does she tell anyone what she is doing? is it necessary to keep it a secret?

is this a modern day setting? last 50 years? last 100 years? last 500?
could this happen in more than one place? did it happen in the US? Europe?

Was the undefined time open ended? or was it more a case of she would be away for anything up to 6 months for example?
Is the amount of time she was away relevant?

does she go away to train as an astronaut and then go into space? (Don't know why I thought of that...)

should we be finding out her job? in education? law enforcement? healthcare? retail? office job? works with children? works with animals? works outside? in the armed forces? in religion?

will she become famous? for what she does?

would she be able to do what she does if she did not remain employed? does she need the status that her job gives her?

is she the first woman to do something? the first person?

the place she goes - in the same town? the same state? in the same country? europe? africa? asia? australasia?

does she go alone? is it an expedition of some sort? is she exploring? does she do something physically demanding? does she have to be brave? clever?

is she going to do something many other people would like to?

If she told her boss why she was leaving, would she still be able to what she wanted to do?

Can anyone else know about it?

Does it involve any sort of game? volunteer work? art?

Will she be out of contact with her friends/family while she's doing what she's doing?

Does the amount of time she's gone reflect how well she did what she left work to do? If so, would less time mean she did better? worse?

if she told her boss why she wanted the leave of absence would she:
not be given leave of absence? not be able to appear on the show? not be able to do well on the show?
Did doing well on the show require good general knowledge? Good problem-solving skills?
Is it possible that someone in future will want leave of absence for the same reason as the woman in this puzzle? Or was her situation absolutely unique?

Is it a monarch-of-the-hill-type show where a given "champion" plays more-or-less indefinitely until someone beats them? Has it always been that way (e. g. Jeopardy™ used to have a limit of three or five times before a champion was forced to "retire" until the "tournament of champions")?

Was it kept secret initially so that she could see how well she did before letting people know? Is she a teacher?

So we know why she wanted a leave of absence--to be on Jeopardy!--and we know why it was indefinite--because she didn't know for sure how long she'd be champion.

Was her employer the only person she was initially trying to keep it from? Religion relevant? Location? Occupation?

So we know why she wanted a leave of absence--to be on Jeopardy!--and we know why it was indefinite--because she didn't know for sure how long she'd be champion. yes to both

Was her employer the only person she was initially trying to keep it from? no Religion relevant? no Location? yope Occupation? some are precluded

So, it IS Ken Jennings? And he took his leave of absence to be on Jeopardy?

What are we trying to figure out? Why he was justified in doing so?

What are we trying to figure out? Why he was justified in doing so?No, it's obvious why someone might choose to take a leave of absence from work in order to pursue an enjoyable activity that is also likely to make him rich & famous. What you have yet to figure out is why he had to keep the reason for his leave secret from his employer

Did she conceal that she was going to participate in Jeopardy from her employer? from her co-workers? from her friends? from her family? from other people?
When she received the call from Jeopardy, was it already sure that she would appear in the show? or was it merely a call for a casting for the show?
Was there any chance that the person to whom she concealed the reason for her leave would not find it out eventually?
Was she afraid to give a bad performance?
Did she have legal reasons to conceal it? financial reasons?
Is this game show illegal in Utah?
Would she have to pay taxes on the money she earned in the show? give part of it to the church?
Did she promise to give part of her profit to the church?

Did he have to conceal it from his company (as opposed to his boss)?
If he didn't conceal it, could he still have gone on Jeopardy?
If he had quit, could he have gotten his job back?
If it was a show other than Jeopardy, would he have had to conceal it?
Did he make a bet/deal with someone about Jeopardy? about game shows in general?
Did he conceal it for moral issues?
Did he conceal it because of someone else?

Would the company have been able to go on?

Does it matter what type of company it was? What his position was within the company?

Was it only as a result of his position that he had to take a leave of absence?
Was there some special condition he had with the company?
Did he have to "not quit" just because he was going on Jeopardy (or did he have to "not quit" for some other reason)?
Would other people at his company faced the same problem? People with the same job as him?

Is there someone else involved aside from he, jeopardy, and the company (as an entity) he worked for?

Did he take the leave of absence before he won his first game of Jeopardy? Or was it after he was already a champion?

Did the reason he couldn't quit deal with:
- a promise/deal he made?
- clients?
- investors?
- tax reasons?
- morals/religion?
- financial?
- politics?
- friends?
- family?
- future work / projects?

Is his position top management? middle management? line worker? subject specialist?
Is his job to do with accounting? consultancy? education? revision/control? security?
Is he dealing with clients (customers)? with government institutions? with the church? with children?
Is relevant what sort of business his employer is doing? relevant who is the owner of the company? relevant where the company is located?
Did he prefer to ask for leave instead of just quitting his job because he wanted to retain or gain some benefits for "number of years working for that company"?
Was the fact he wanted to conceal in the first place ..
- that he is going to participate in a game show?
- that he is going to participate in this particular game show?
- that he might earn a lot of money?
- that he might become famous?
- that he does not know how long his participation in the show might last?
Is there some company rule or code relevant? one that forbids employees to take part in gambling, betting, competitive games for money, and so on?
Is there some connection between his employer and the company producing Jeopardy? so that it could be appear like bribery if an employee of ... wins a lot in a game show produced by ...?

Was it because he had won so many games before they were on tv, so it would have given away that he hadn't lost?noish

Did it have to do with how jeopardy tapes their shows? With the fact that he won for so long that he had to keep making excuses for leaving?

Relevant how he traveled to California?
Was he afraid there might be some dispute about frequent flyer awards he earned with these trips?

Did he have to take the leave of absence until after all the episodes were aired so as not to spoil the suprise of when he lost?

***SPOILER ************
Jeopardy! shows are taped well before they air, but the outcome is confidential until they air. Since 5 shows are taped on the same day, this wasn't much of a problem when all winners were automatically "retired" after 5 consecutive wins. But when they took the upper limit off, KJ had a problem, as he couldn't tell his boss that he was still winning. Once the shows were aired, of course, the boss found out. But that was much later. Thanks for sticking with it, everyone, & please check out my nwew puzzle at the bottom of the page.

That's not true. I know that several people knew that he won and even more people knew when he lost. Plus, he could have said that he wanted to take a leave of absence indefinitely purely because he was on Jeopardy!, without revealing whether or not he had won a single game.

This is what he claims in his book, Brainiac. In fact, apparently, someone in the audience broke the secrecy & announced it online when he lost. That doesn't mean he didn't have the motive he said.

I also read somewhere that his boss knew he was leaving for Jeopardy but, of course, the results were kept from him.

I have Jennings's book & will check it tonight.I'm pretty sure he kept the reason for his extended absence secret from his bossbecause what was supposed to be secret was not that he was on the show at all but that he kept on winning.

I sit corrected: Jennings did tell his immediate boss but he told no one else at his job (although the news dids eventually leak out.Of course, the puzzle would work as a puzzle even if Jennings hadn't told his boss( say, because he couldn't trust her not to blab); so I just should not have called it a true story.
