Verina said to her boss, "I have to take an indefinite leave of absence without pay. I can't tell you why, but you'll find out eventually, & you'll see that I was justified." She's right--& she's not sick or a spy or on any kind of secret government mission. This is based on a true story about the only person in the world who ever had this particular reason. What is it?? |

is it relevant that she takes an indefinite leave of absence rather than just quits her job? is it necessary that she remain 'employed'? or remains in her job role? are any of these relevant about Verina: her age? her religion? her physical appearance? her gender? her job? her education? her romantic relationships? her parents? her children? her hobbies? her pets? her race? her place of residence? her country of origin? the amount of money she has? the clothes she wears? where she goes on holiday? what she eats? is she intending to go somewhere relevant? do something relevant? is she trying to avoid something? stop something bad happening? make something good happen? is her motive selfish? altruistic? does she have a choice? will harm come to her if she does not do this? is money involved? will she gain financially from doing this? will anyone? is she going to change some aspect of her life other than her work? is she going to do some alternative type of work? is she going to create something? does she do this in repsonse to something that happens to her? something that happened recently? does she inherit something relevant? discover something? does she tell anyone what she is doing? is it necessary to keep it a secret? is this a modern day setting? last 50 years? last 100 years? last 500? could this happen in more than one place? did it happen in the US? Europe? |

If she told her boss why she was leaving, would she still be able to what she wanted to do? Can anyone else know about it? Does it involve any sort of game? volunteer work? art? Will she be out of contact with her friends/family while she's doing what she's doing? Does the amount of time she's gone reflect how well she did what she left work to do? Is it a monarch-of-the-hill-type show where a given "champion" plays more-or-less indefinitely until someone beats them? Has it always been that way (e. g. Did she conceal that she was going to participate in Jeopardy from her employer? from her co-workers? from her friends? from her family? from other people? When she received the call from Jeopardy, was it already sure that she would appear in the show? or was it merely a call for a casting for the show? Was there any chance that the person to whom she concealed the reason for her leave would not find it out eventually? Was she afraid to give a bad performance? Did she have legal reasons to conceal it? financial reasons? Is this game show illegal in Utah? Would she have to pay taxes on the money she earned in the show? give part of it to the church? Did she promise to give part of her profit to the church? |

Did he have to conceal it from his company (as opposed to his boss)? If he didn't conceal it, could he still have gone on Jeopardy? If he had quit, could he have gotten his job back? If it was a show other than Jeopardy, would he have had to conceal it? Did he make a bet/deal with someone about Jeopardy? about game shows in general? Did he conceal it for moral issues? Did he conceal it because of someone else? |

Was it only as a result of his position that he had to take a leave of absence? Was there some special condition he had with the company? Did he have to "not quit" just because he was going on Jeopardy (or did he have to "not quit" for some other reason)? Would other people at his company faced the same problem? People with the same job as him? Is there someone else involved aside from he, jeopardy, and the company (as an entity) he worked for? |

Since 5 shows are taped on the same day, this wasn't much of a problem when all winners were automatically "retired" after 5 consecutive wins. But when they took the upper limit off, KJ had a problem, as he couldn't tell his boss that he was still winning. Once the shows were aired, of course, the boss found out. But that was much later. Thanks for sticking with it, everyone, & please check out my nwew puzzle at the bottom of the page. |

That's not true. I know that several people knew that he won and even more people knew when he lost. Plus, he could have said that he wanted to take a leave of absence indefinitely purely because he was on Jeopardy!, without revealing whether or not he had won a single game. |

This is what he claims in his book, Brainiac. In fact, apparently, someone in the audience broke the secrecy & announced it online when he lost. That doesn't mean he didn't have the motive he said. |

I sit corrected: Jennings did tell his immediate boss but he told no one else at his job (although the news dids eventually leak out.Of course, the puzzle would work as a puzzle even if Jennings hadn't told his boss( say, because he couldn't trust her not to blab); so I just should not have called it a true story. |
