George & Greta, a happily married & childless couple, have been offered a pair of almost perfect jobs in the same organization. The work is interesting, well-paid, safe, legal, & in accord with G & G's principles. The benefits are excellent, the jobs are secure, & all the co-workers appeal to G & G. The organization is in an attractive, safe, interesting city with good politics & good weather, which is near everyone G & G want to be near & far from everyone G & G want to avoid. Yet they are--reasonably--turning down these wonderful jobs in favor of jobs that are less attractive in one or more of the respects listed. How come????

the chosen jobs - are they in a different town? state? country? is there anything about the local laws that has affected their choice? is there some benefit that they will get if they choose the less attractive jobs? or would they avoid some disbenefit by choosing them?

does the choice concern - where they want to live? who they want to mix with? their future plans in having a family? their finances?

could this puzzle equally be summed up as 'G & G choose to live in place A rather than place B? they choose to work in place A rather than place B? they choose to work for company A rather than company B? they choose to be part of community A rather than community B?

do healthcare facilties figure in their decision? educational facilities? attitude to race?

is their race relevant? is it relevant they are childless? is their age relevant? could they be late middle aged? young twenties?

are their hobbies relevant?

would choosing the second jobs allow them to do something they could not if they chose the other jobs?

Do they want to avoid working together for some reason? Do they feel like their relationship would suffer if they spent so much time together?
Are they thinking of having kids in the near future?

is adoption relevant? local rules for adoption?

would the place with the better jobs somehow affect their ability to have children? to adopt?

is there something about them that would mean they would be considered unsuitable to be parents in some areas?

are the educational opportunities in the two areas relevant? would their future child have better opportunities in the chosen area? is the area less wealthy? more deprived? would this give an advantage to their future child? would it 'open doors' academically if the child came from a relatively deprived area? are quotas od any sort relevant?
here in the UK it is said to be easier to get into medical school if you come from a poor state school than if you come from a rich private school - the threshold is lowered. Not sure if it's true - is this sort of thing relevant?

Regarding what aspects of having children is the place they want to live relevant:
Concieving? Pregnancy? Childbirth? Infancy? School years?
Is there a specific place they want to live? A specific city? State? Country? Continent? A specific quality they want in the place they live? Or is it more that they want to avoid something specific about the place where the jobs are located?
Does the "disbenefit that they are trying to avoid" have to do with government? Laws? Taxes? Public institutions (like hospitals or schools) Attitudes? Politics? People? Is it a financial disbenefit? Emotional? Physical? Would anyone consider it a disbenefit? Or is it more subjective than that?

Does this emotional disbenefit relate to both their personal stories? Prior death involved?

Does the type of job have to do anything with their decision? Is their decision based only on the place? Would they both suffer for the same reason if they had children there? Would the children suffer if they grow up in that place?

Does their decision have to do with physical features of place A? Something emotional? A memory?
Does Place A LACK something compared to Place B?
Does Place A HAVE something compared to Place B?
Does place A lack parks? Lack a back yard for them? Lack Privacy? Lack something life sustaining? Lack something personal to the two of them?
Does place A have crooked cops? Have too many of the wrong kind of church? Have something that would upset G&G if they had to see it every day?

I know of the town of Hell, Michigan - does this have anything to do with the puzzle?

Was this experience, in your opinion:

- generally unbothersome to g&g
- definitely negative, but only intermittently traumatic to g&g
- moderately negative, slightly affecting daily life for the couple
- severely affecting every aspect of g & g's lives

did this experience occur:
- when the couple were children
- when they were engaged
- when they were married
- during pregnancy
- OR did it happen to a dear friend/loved one of theirs?

would most people be bothered by this experience?

Are these experiences that one could likely read about in an American History text?
A World History text?

Is this experience related to:
- violence
- religion
- (pardon my taboo) sex
- politics
- a community as a whole
- a death
- rituals
- maternity
- paternity

Are any names (of the city, mayor, family, etc.) relevant?

Are g or g:
- paranoid
- obsessive-compulsive
- phobic
- ill or abnormal at all?

Was this experience caused by:
- someone
- some people
- a natural force
- animals?

Did it make them:
- sad
- angry
- scared
- nostalgic
- of mixed emotions
- none of these?

Are their past experiences with each other relevant?

Is this community mostly of one religion?
(e. g. the Amish settlements)

Is the thing they are trying to avoid merely traumatic, or is it dangerous?

You say that the experience was related to sex, violence, rituals and yopeishly to death.

Are they trying to avoid:
- Negative sexual experiences
- Violence
- Rituals (on the side, do you mean sacrificial rituals?)
- Death
- or simply the new community members' opinions of these relevant topics?

Embarrassing because:
- Both family and city share a name
- City name reminds them of something unpleasant
- City name is seemingly nonsensical

Is this a famous city for any reason?

Is it Troy? yes
Anything else we need to find out? Well, there's one other fact, but it should be a snap to figure out.Keep in mind that the reason concerns the family they are planning to have

Tragically, as is the case with many American cities, the heart of downtown Troy fell victim to so-called "urban renewal" in the 1970s. The gutting of Troy's business district, which destroyed downtown Troy's vitality, has been a major contributing factor to the city's problems in recent years. However, there is an effort by lawmakers, business owners, and concerned citizens to revitalize the downtown area.

Part of this effort has been the establishment (and some would say success) of its "Antique District," which is located on River Street in downtown Troy. Various cafes, sandwich shops, record stores, and art galleries have also begun to appear and/or gain prominence. In addition, there are numerous projects in the works to fill currently unoccupied buildings and storespace in the downtown area, including clothing stores, an independent film theatre, and other businesses. As a host to many art, literature, and music lovers, the city also hosts an array of free shows during the Summer. Many of these can be seen on River Street, in parks, and in certain cafes and coffee shops.

From Wikpedia.

Is any of the above relevant?

Is the fall of Troy relevant? The historical, fictional Troy is relevant, although the specific fall is not important. Remember, G&G's prospective family is important & I said 'yope' in response to whether names in the family were important. NOW IT SHOULD PRACTICALLY SOLVE ITSELF!!!!
I'm trying to think ...

Aaahh... I wish it were ....

Would the names create vulgar or otherwise offensive words when combined with 'Troy'?

Is the family Greek?

Is Homer relevant?

I'm sorry ... I thought that 'Greta' might be a pseudonym simply suggesting a female.

But anyway, do they know that they want to name their daughter Helen?

*******SPOILER *********

G&G are planning to name their first daughter Helen. So they avoid moving to Troy in order to spare her the embarrassment of being "Helen of Troy." Old puzzle hands may remnember that I once posted a similar puzzle about a hunchback who turned down a good job at U. of Notre Dame. And now please looook at my new puzzle at the bottom of the page!!

Note: I just thought of the following objection: Why couldn't they take the jobs & live in a neighboring town? So it would be better to make this a perfect house they turned down.

Or - why not just name their daughter something else? But good puzzle! Well, it's a background condition of the puzzle that they're set on naming her Helen. Maybe they're naming her after someone, or maybe they just like the name.
