Good news? (that it didn't happen) Literally "the time wasn't right"? (e.g. "not 12:34") |

Was there a mismatch on times? e.g. a bomb set to the wrong time, so failed to kill its target? |

Was his watch set on the correct local time? Who's watch? The thing that did not happen, would it have happened if it had been earlier? later? seconds? minutes? hours? this is largley irrelevant does it have to coincide with something else that also has to happen? a set of circumstances occurred that meant this thing did not happen at the same time? |

Do you think we need to reproduce the posts (?3) or will they come back - or can we just go straight to nuclear war and the Cuban crisis and why was the time wrong? Dunno what happened a bit twilight zone-ish if you ask me! I think in the interests of the archive I will do a quick recap of this and we should carry on. Just give me a minute and I will be with you. |

Due to the really wierd loss of all yesterdays posts I will do a quick recap of what was discovered by yesterdays questions. The thing that nearly happened was a nuclear war caused by the Cuban missile crisis with the 2 main people involved being Kruschev and Kennedy, the big thing to find now is why the time wasn't right. |

Was the time not right for Kennedy? for Kruschev? for someone else? for the world? Would war have happened if the time had been right? Was something not ready in time? Was someone waiting for something? Had a time been predicted - e.g. by Nostradamus? Was an actual watch or clock involved? Was a specific time of day relevant? Day/night? |

Was the time not right for people to declare war? for missiles to work? for a button to be pressed? a telephone call to be made? a conversation to take place? Was someone not where they should have been? Did we come nearer to war than most people think? Did both sides have as great an amount of nuclear armaments as was thought? As much knowledge of their use and effects? |

Nothing to do with new year When you say the actual time the events took place is irrelevant do you mean the time of day or the year/decade the missile crises happened? The time in the puzzle does not refer to the time this event happened/nearly happened it is a bit more lateral |

SPOILER: Rufus has bretty much got it so I'll spoil. The puzzle concerns the events of the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, when soviets planned to deploy nuclear missiles in Cuba much to the distress of the Americans. This is widely believed to be the closest so far that the planet has come to a nuclear war. the full details can be found here. Cuban Missile Crisis The Time in the puzzle statement refers to the Doomsday Clock, which is a symbolic clock face that depicts the supposed nearness of a nuclear war, with midnight being the start of the war and the clock showing minutes to midnight. The clock image appears on the cover of The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists and is maintained by the board of directors. The clock first appeared in 1947 and was set at 7 minutes to midnight, and over the years it has been advanced and retarded as events dictated. The Doomsday Clock However for whatever reason during the Missile Crisis the time did not change despite opinion that we were on the very brink of a nuclear war. Possibly the speed of events was to blame. So A nuclear war almost happened, but the time on the Doomsday Clock was not right. Thanks to everyone for playing. |
