I'm sure no-one'll remember me, but I've been off the forum for a couple of years. Here's my big return! Every day, I'm asked to lie. I don't have to do so, but if I don't then my life may be hugely inconvenienced as a result. And I'm not the only one - I'm sure that hundreds, if not thousands of people are being asked to do so every day too. But this act is not illegal, or even the slightest bit immoral. Why? And to answer the inevitable first question - the word 'lie' does not mean 'to be in a horizontal position'. |

And, having been away for a long time, I'd forgotten about the custom of putting one's username in the title. Oops! |

Is it something you do without giving it much thought at the time? If I were one of those thousands of people who do it every day, would I be aware that I was lying? Does it involve filling out a form? |

Very good idea, but no. You're on the right lines with "lying to avoid identity fraud", however. |

Do you get asked for your Mother's maiden name for security reasons, but use one you've made up rather than the real one? no - remember, the lie is about my name, not my mother's. Are you really Edward Mason? Yes: I can be too honest for my own good, and so any pratfalls I make are attributable right back to me :-) Aha - do you put in another name so that someone on the same computer system at school or college doesn't recognise you? on the right lines with the "shared computer system", but not quite there yet. |

do you put a completely different name? or just alter yours slightly? no to these - I don't lie when entering my name. The particular website I lie on is immensely relevant - finding out the website may be a great leap to solving the puzzle. do you do this on a private computer that no one else uses? NO or would you? NO or only on machines at a public place? absolutely |

In one of the other threads you mentioned that you have not learned to drive yet, and there was a second part of that remark ( I have forgotten exactly what ) that indicated you may still be in school. Do you have to lie about your name to use your parents' credit card? Sorry about poking into your private life, but you are the subject of the puzzle... |

In one of the other threads you mentioned that you have not learned to drive yet, and there was a second part of that remark ( I have forgotten exactly what ) that indicated you may still be in school. You're probably thinking of when I said that I haven't yet had to fill out a tax form, which was in the same post as the 'driving' comment. Do you have to lie about your name to use your parents' credit card? no - Amazon accepts debit cards. Do you click the 'If you're not Edward Mason, click here' link to log out? YES!!! And that makes a ***** SPOILER ***** As above. So to continue the title: "There are lies, damned lies and Amazon.co.uk" :-) |
