Well, back to the drawing board. Could it have happened any other place in Northern Ireland? Relevant what part of Northern Ireland? |

Is this set during the Troubles? If so, is this relevant? By which I mean: would this puzzle work, say, for an immigration official at JFK Airport? A Customs official at Dover? Are passports relevant? Does he always receive an answer? Or just sometimes? Would the travellers be in trouble if they refused to give an answer? An old friend of mine was once asked at US Immigration whether he was a member of the Communist Party, and he replied: "And if I was? What's it to you!" ... anything along those lines? Is it a real question that demands a reply, as opposed to a formal "would you mind just stopping there, Sir?" (to which it would not be a good idea to answer no)? |

Is he asking their opinion on anything? Would the answer be obvious to anyone watching, o just the soldier? Is it clear to him what the person is going to say, or what the actual answer is? (what I mean by this is that if they were mistaken and sad the wrong thing, would he have been able to predict that they said the wrong thing, or would he have known what the actual answer should be) |

(what I mean by this is that if they were mistaken and sad the wrong thing, would he have been able to predict that they said the wrong thing, or would he have known what the actual answer should be) the key is that the soldier himself knows the answer already he is trying to establish if the person knows it |

So he is asking them a question to test their knowledge of something? And there is one right answer, which the soldier knows? Is it that if they get it right they are allowed into the country, but if not they are not? I'm assuming the answer is not obvious to some ofthe people he asks, as some of them are mistaken? Should each person he asks give a different answer, or is there one right answer which everyone should give? |

So he is asking them a question to test their knowledge of something? yes And there is one right answer, which the soldier knows? yes Is it that if they get it right they are allowed into the country, but if not they are not? more so they would be arrested if they failed to answer correctly I'm assuming the answer is not obvious to some ofthe people he asks, as some of them are mistaken? yes but it should be Should each person he asks give a different answer, or is there one right answer which everyone should give? maybe many different answers but for each person asked there is only one right answer. Good questions. |

The soldier asks people's names among other things. Is pronunciation of the answer as important as the answer itself? |

So they have to show their id, yet he asks their name even though it's clear from the id what it is. Is there more to it than this? |

So they have to show their id, yet he asks their name even though it's clear from the id what it is. Is there more to it than this? this is not the solution . typically they would ask your name first and then request id to verify this. The answer to the puzzle is a question not specifically about the person being questioned but about something else that is very relevant |

Does it involve some sort of local knowledge? (eg the Dutch resistance in WWII used to use the pronunciation of "Scheveningen" to determine who was really Dutch and who was a German occupier). Anything like that? Any place names relevant at all? Does he ask something about the passport itself? Is he looking at the passport when he asks it? |

Is he testing their knowledge of the country they are entering? no Is it a question that someone should be able to answer straight away? yes. good question Does he look at their eyes because if they look away, he knows they must be thinking about it and they shouldn't have to? Almost. It's more that if they look away they are attempting to find out the answer which they shouldn't have to. Great progress in your last post. |

If not, should we? well in my own experience it's in Northern Ireland on the border with the Republic of Ireland but this sort of question could have have been used at any location in Northern Ireland at that time |

Harbour? you have to remember this was when the troubles were at their height thankfully those bad days are behind us. This could have occured wherever there was checkpoint but in the main they would be along the border . I believe there was over 100 permanent checkpoints in place during the 70's & 80's |

The question is being used to distinguish between groups of people? If so, are the groups: Protestants and Catholics? Northern and Southern Irish? Republicans and Loyalists? Paramilitaries and non-paramilitaries? Is this scenario peculiar to Northern Ireland? Could a similar question have been used in Cyprus at the time of their "difficulties"? The answer to the question is not specific to a particular location? But it is specific to each individual? Some people would tend to look at something to determine the answer? If so, would they: Look up? Look down? Look at another person? Look at themselves? Are the people travelling through the checkpoint on foot? In a vehicle? |

Is it to check that they are in their own vehicle? yes Does he ask them about the number plate? No but The colour? bingo!! The make/model? Something else about the appearance? Something about insurance, car tax etc? Is it relevant whether the car is left or right-hand drive? *******************Spoiler************** That's a spoiler so i'll explain. I grew up living right on the border between the Republic and Northern Ireland and we did most of our shopping etc in the north. During the bad days of the troubles this meant passing through a permanent British Army border checkpoint . I was puzzled as a young child why the soldier would approach the driver stare into his eyes and ask "what colour is your vehicle". Apparently the Army's research showed that in as much as 30% of cases involving a hijacked vehicle the occupants were unable to say what colour the car was without looking at the exterior. I know this sounds bizarre but a former soldier recently confirmed this to me. If you glanced away or hesitated before answering the soldier would detain you further for more in depth questioning about the ownership of the vehicle. Thankfully those days are now gone and the border crossings no longer have a military presence, In fact in some cases the only way you know you've crossed the border is by the fact that the road signs are in miles and not kilometres and the irish translation of place names is no longer on the signs. thanks to all for playing |
