Was he or she talking of objects? non tangible things? Is the one use of them the habitual use? is there another inhabitual use? Did he want to make you laugh? Was his statement erroneous or imperfect in any way (slip of the tongue, ignorance of something)? Is the relation of you and him relevant? friends? family? colleagues? strangers? |

Was he or she talking of objects? non tangible things? tangible things Is the one use of them the habitual use? no is there another inhabitual use? not sure what you mean Did he want to make you laugh? yes Was his statement erroneous or imperfect in any way (slip of the tongue, ignorance of something)? no Is the relation of you and him relevant? friends? family? colleagues? strangers? irrel The bit in italics was just explaining how I thougt of the puzzle and apologising in advance for its slightly silly nature. It's not important who said it to me, you would do better to focus on the puzzle statement itself (Well, that's one use for them). I'm sorry that was unclear |

Are the tangible things made out of: metal? wood? paper? glass? stone? concrete? tissue? organic material? plastic? So 'them' refers to objects? The statement is about the way certain objects can be used, right? And this way is rather uncommon? Are the objects used by a specific group of people? of similar profession? similar interests? Is the statement a kind of joke? a pun? |

So we are talking about a somewhat unusual or surreal use for one or more live sheep? Does the number of sheep matter? (If so, insert usual list of integers). Any wordplay involved? Eg use/ewes? Is the tendency of sheep to follow each other relevant to the puzzle? Anything to do with counting sheep? Any relevant parasites, etc, on the sheep? Are they white sheep? Black sheep? Do any of the sheep get harmed when put to this use? Do they get frightened? Paranoid? Would it work for rams, ewes, or both? Do the sheep move around when put to this use, or do they stand still (mostly)? |

was the recent news story about sheep? yes or dogs? yope only thing I vaguely recall were a few comments about the show One Man and his Dog - anything to do with that? no Perhaps I should add that I don't know how widespread this news story was...I heard it in England, but as it's not very important news (more just funny) it may not have been worldwide. It's not absolutely necessary to have heard the news story in order to solve this puzzle though |

When you say "lots of sheep", would that be all the sheep in England? All the sheep of one particular breed? All sheep of a particular colour? Roughly how many sheep would this apply to: 20? 50? 100? 1000? 100,000? More than this? Strictly ewes only? Would it work for dehorned rams? Is there something doglike about the sheep's behaviour? Any particular navigational skills of sheep? Do some sheep have roles of authority within their sheepy society? Do some sheep act as lookouts for the flock in the style of meerkats? Do the sheep control vehicles? |

When you say "lots of sheep", would that be all the sheep in England? No All the sheep of one particular breed? No All sheep of a particular colour? All the sheep used in this way would be of the same colour, but not all sheep of this colour would be used in this way Roughly how many sheep would this apply to: 20? 50? 100? 1000? 100,000? Did the news story mention sheep dogs? shepherds? the life of sheep? is a particular thing about the life of sheep relevant? Was it about an unusual thing about sheep? that happened once? several times? in England? in different places? Was the idea to use sheep as sheepdogs brought up by the news story? or did it only make your friend think of it? So I guess you saw the news story (on TV? in the paper? you heard it on the radio?)? and then you discussed about it? including the transformation from sheep into sheepdog? and your friend said: "Well, that's one use for them"? which made you laugh? The one use your friend was refering to was the use of sheep as sheepdog, correct? Saying it like this there is assumedly a second use for sheep? would it help to find out this second use? |

I don't think so but there may be a detail you haven't worked out. The criminals didn't just offer dogs and deliver sheep, there is a reason why the sheep had to be female. |

Well, I wonder how this could work at all, to sell sheep as dogs. But to use rams with horns seems to be still more difficult? Are the sheep disguised or transformed in any way (This reminds me of the Monty Python's pet conversion sketch)? Is there a feature of the 'dogs' that is praised in particular, say our dogs have soft, woolen hair? |

Well, I wonder how this could work at all, to sell sheep as dogs. But to use rams with horns seems to be still more difficult? It is Are the sheep disguised or transformed in any way Yes (This reminds me of the Monty Python's pet conversion sketch)? Sorry, never seen it... Is there a feature of the 'dogs' that is praised in particular, say our dogs have soft, woolen hair? Noish It's pretty much all there now. The one detail left is which breed of dog the sheep were disguised as, and if you get that then you should be able to guess how they were disguised. Hint: it's not a breed of dog normally used to herd sheep. If this is too much to work out then I'll sp01l soon - I think the answer is pretty funny |

Sheep and livestock herding dogs? Guard dogs? Miniature or Toy dogs? Mongrel or Curs dogs? I still don't understand the horn issue. |

I was thinking of poodles, as they are mostly dressed up? Yup Here is list of dog breed categories from Wikipedia: Sight hounds? Scent hounds? Gundogs? Terrier? Spitz or Artic dogs? Sheep and livestock herding dogs? Guard dogs? Miniature or Toy dogs? Mongrel or Curs dogs? I still don't understand the horn issue. **************************SPOILER***************** According to a news story I heard a while ago, poodles are becoming the pet of choice among the rich and famous of Japan. Someone decided to cash in on this, banking on the fact that most Japanese people have seen neither poodles nor sheep in their lives. They sold thousands of sheep which had been shaved to look like poodles to the Japanese for half the price of a normal poodle. According to the story this was discovered when a Japanese actress on a talk show and complained that her new poodle would not bark or eat dog food; she then showed a picture to the camera and someone helpfully pointed out it was in fact a sheep. This prompted a friend of mine to suggest that funny consequences might ensue if the Japanese tried to use their new “dogs” to herd sheep, to which I replied “Well, that’s one use for them”. The horn thing is because I think even if you have never seen a poodle, you would be suspicious if it had horns. This was of course kind of a silly puzzle, since a) According to this snopes.com article this story is untrue b) Poodles are not generally used as sheepdogs c) If the Japanese had sheep to herd, they would of course recognise their dogs as what they were. But I quite liked the story and thought it deserved a puzzle. The news story and a picture of the alleged poodle-sheep can be found at http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2007190295,00.html |
