Is it the same 'he' in all five cases? General 'he' or a specific persona? 'They': authorities? government? law enforcement? jail administration? What he wanted: tangible? of benefit only to him? to others? A really wild guess: A man commits a minor crime in an attempt to get health care. While in prison, he develops a condition that threatens his life and authorities, not liking his death being on their hands, provide him with treatment he wanted in the first place. |

Is the thing that he tried to get before he was sent to jail the same as the thing he wanted that he got when he did something they didn't like? Did he commit a crime? If so: pickpocketing? stealing? burglary? black market? murder? assault? accidental killing? smuggling? traitor? deserter? kidnapping? arson? destroying property? poacher? disrupting the peace? Other? The thing he did that they didn't like, was that another crime? |

So this man committed some crime to get what he wanted, and was sent to jail for it. He then committed a murder while in jail, and as a consequence got what he wanted. Right? When he committed the murder in jail, did "they" realise they were giving him what he wanted? Did they give it to him to try and convince him not to kill again? Or was it meant to be a punishment? Was he put in solitary confinement? Sentenced to death? |

Why thank you Rage29 I'm a little confused...was the murder he committed his attempted suicide (ie murder of himself)? Or was that the first crime, for which he was put in jail? Did he kill a fellow inmate? A guard? A visitor to the prison? Did he mean to kill them? Or was it an accident? Did he kill them out of anger? Did the law enforcement officials sentence him to death as a punishment for his crime? Or did they take pity on him and decide he should be allowed to die? Was this a euthanasia situation? Is it important why he wanted to commit suicide? Or how he did it? |

Thanks for the puzzle...it was a good one! And I seem to remember that until fairly recently suicide itself was a crime punishable by death-which didn't seem particularly sensible to me! |
