Is it a sport contest? No science contest? No Actually, it's a sweepstakes. Calling it a "contest" might have been a little bit misleading. are the contestants humans? Yes Who do you call a winner: someone who has won the same contest before? No another contest? No |

is there one prize in this sweepstakes? or other places, grand prize, first place, second place, third place...? important what the winnings are? money? trip? other tangible items--such as jewelry? should we focus on the odds of winning? is the "winner" simply the winner in this particular sweepstakes? are "losers" people who lost this particular sweepstake, or are you talking about people who generally don't win sweepstakes. have anything to do with gambling? like on horses? in the casino? is it a sweepstakes where you send in some sort of entry form? do you have to buy anything to win in the sweepstakes? (such as magazines) |

is there one prize in this sweepstakes? or other places, grand prize, first place, second place, third place...? Irrelevant important what the winnings are? money? trip? other tangible items--such as jewelry? Irrelevant should we focus on the odds of winning? Not really is the "winner" simply the winner in this particular sweepstakes? In the phrase "losers are just as likely to win as winners" the person who "wins" is the person who wins this sweepstakes, but the word "winners" refers to something else. are "losers" people who lost this particular sweepstake, or are you talking about people who generally don't win sweepstakes. Neither have anything to do with gambling? like on horses? in the casino? is it a sweepstakes where you send in some sort of entry form? This last one do you have to buy anything to win in the sweepstakes? (such as magazines) Yope - explore. Focus on what you have to do to enter the sweepstakes. |

is it an entry form where you actually are signing up to win something or a form where you are buying something (maybe for a low price). guess--is it one of these forms where you maybe buy something (lets say a certain amount of books for a very low price) and if you paste the token, sticker, stamp (whatever they give you) in a specified circle on the form, you can get a prize/gift of some sort (bookbag, mug, etc). important what the "token" has written on it? if so--does it say" extra prize? winner? |

Could I enter the contest merely by buying a postage stamp? Would I have to affix the stamp to something to enter the contest? Does "winners" and "losers" refer to the people depicted on the postage stamp? (I'm thinking maybe there's some old Civil War generals on postage stamps or something, and stamps from either side are just as likely to win the sweepstake) The people entering the contest? |

No (I'm thinking maybe there's some old Civil War generals on postage stamps or something, and stamps from either side are just as likely to win the sweepstake) The people entering the contest? Yes Just to save time, I will reveal that all you ave to do to enter the contest is to buy a postage stamp, affix it to an envelope, and mail it in. Now you just have to figure out what "losers" and "winners" are. |

is one born winner or loser? No Once one has become a winner or loser can the status change? Yesish If your sweepstakes was substituted with "publisher's clearinghouse" sweepstakes would the puzzle be the same? For the definitions of "winner" and "loser" in the puzzle statement, the statement that "losers are just as likely to win as winners" is true in any sweepstakes. But only in this particular sweepstakes is that fact at all notable. |

Okay, since this puzzle seems to have dried up, I will post the SPOILER: In the United States, companies running sweepstakes must make the sweepstakes open to anyone who wishes to enter: they may not require you to purchase a product as a condition for entry (because if you had to, it would be considered gambling). Generally, this restriction is circumvented by requiring each request for an entry to be sent in a separate envelop. Since the expected value of one entry is usually far less than the cost of an envelope and postage, few bother. This particular sweepstakes was a sweepstakes on a video arcade machine where if you beat the game (became a "winner") you would be given a code which you could mail in to be entered in the sweepstakes. But in order to comply with the above mentioned law, you could also enter by sending a plain envelope with a request for entry, and no code. Hence "losers" of the game could enter the sweepstakes, and win, just as easily as "winners". |
