Are you a spectator? are you a participant? Am I correct to assume you support the away team since you are worried about getting home? Are we talking about "home" as in state/city of residence? or "home" as in home plate? are we talking about a sport? soccer? baseball? american football? basketball? if sports: if the home team won, would the away team have to play another game? if so, the away team and the home team have to play each other again? would the away team have to play another team? If the home team won, would you or the away team miss a connection--on a bus/plane? is it a educational competition? math? engineering? if educational, if the home team wins, would the away team have to go through more rounds? or would they be completely out of the competition? |

Wins: a particular single game? a series of games? a title? Is the puzzle statement made during the game that it refers to? Is extra innings relevant? If the home team wins, will the game have run too late for you to use some sort of public transportation? Will the bus have stopped for the night? the trains? the subway? Will they still be running, but with a much longer time between each one? Would it help us to figure out who the 'home team' is? or at least what city you're talking about? |

Yes-ish the the bus will have stopped for the night, and Yes to it's a charter bus... Hmm. Is it the case not so much that the bus will have stopped, but that something that needs to be done so that the bus can take you all home will be impossible? A border crossing? a bridge? a tunnel? some part of the route home will be impassable? Will the bus driver be unable? unwilling? to drive if the home team wins? Is your difficulty in getting home related solely to the home team winning? or is it more related to something else that will happen if the home team wins? |

Let me get this straight... Yesish to a certain time, that is not before the match ends, but is only yesishly after the match ends. Is it a certain time interval after an event (eg 5mins after the end of the match)? Was the bus driver's comment flippant? eg I'm not leaving until I see the home team lose. Were there more supporters for one of the sides? home? away? If this side with more supporters had won, would there have been fireworks or something like that could help the driver know that the game is over? Some form of celebration or cheering? Here's what im thinking he said, "I'll be here 30 mins after the fireworks start". But if the home team wins, there won't be any fireworks? (Unlikely, but worth a shot :-D) Otherwise, did he suggest in the statement, that he would be there 30 mins after something that would have most likely only occurred after the away team won? |

Or a lack of an inning? I know that if the home team is already winning when going into the bottom of the ninth, then it isn't played. So, maybe the bus driver said something like, "I'll pick you guys up after the home team bats the ninth inning"? |

so, the game is away, since you drove a bus there....and you need to get back. I'm trying to remember back when I played softball... I am thinking that the away (visiting) team bats first. Is this correct? If they get to the ninth inning and the visitors bat and are ahead, then the home team will bat. If the visitors bat and are behind, then the game will be over... so, here is one scenario (hopefully I didn't mess it up!): you and rest on bus root for the away team. The bus driver says, I'll be here for 30 minutes after your last at bat. The away team bats first in the ninth inning. You think, well if the away team is ahead (by a lot) after their last at bat, then the home team will have to play. If they go over 30 minutes (which would be amazing), then the bus driver would be gone (according to his poorly worded statement). If the away team is behind after their at bat in the ninth, then the game would be over, because the home team would have already won. The only thing I am confused about is that the puzzle statement says, "if the home team wins, how will we get home" and it makes it sound like the home team is batting first...is it possible that you both had to take a bus to the field, so even though you had to drive to the field, you were batting second? If this is the case, take my scenario and reverse everything! Whew! My brain fried on that! |

so, the game is away, since you drove a bus there....and you need to get back. No, the "home team" refers to the team whose stadium the field was played at. We were rooting from the home team. I am thinking that the away (visiting) team bats first. Is this correct? Yes If they get to the ninth inning and the visitors bat and are ahead, then the home team will bat. If the visitors bat and are behind, then the game will be over... And this is the key fact. There's just one more subtlety... so, here is one scenario (hopefully I didn't mess it up!): This scenario is not correct The only thing I am confused about is that the puzzle statement says, "if the home team wins, how will we get home" and it makes it sound like the home team is batting first... The visiting team bats first is it possible that you both had to take a bus to the field, so even though you had to drive to the field, you were batting second? Yes, we were rooting for the home team. This was an event for college interns at Microsoft, so many of us didn't have cars, which is why they had to charter a bus, even though it was just to take us from Redmond into downtown Seattle If this is the case, take my scenario and reverse everything! |

Hmm, i don't see what's missing. Is it just the actual statement that's incorrectly worded? Or are we missing something else? You have to figure out exactly what the statement was. The reason it was poorly worded has something to do with the fact that the ninth inning isn't always played to completion, but even if the visiting team were ahead at the end of the top of the ninth (so the home team would bat in the bottom of the ninth), if the bus driver's statement were interpreted literally, the bus might still not leave... |

OK, let's try again. Is it relevant, then, that in the event that the home team is winning at any time during the bottom of the ninth inning, the game immediately ends? (As opposed to the scenario I presented earlier where the home team is ahead at the beginning of the bottom of the ninth) If so, is the bus driver's statement like: "I'll pick you up after the third out of the bottom of the ninth." But, if the home team wins, this third out would never occur. The actual statement is probably a lot more concise, but is this the right idea? |

If so, is the bus driver's statement like: "I'll pick you up after the third out of the bottom of the ninth." But, if the home team wins, this third out would never occur. The actual statement is probably a lot more concise, but is this the right idea? Ding! Ding! Ding! This is exactly what he said. (Note that there is a small chance that the third out at the bottom of the ninth will occur even if the home team wins, as it is possible to get both a run and an out on the same play.) SPOILER

good puzzle! I was stuck on the idea that the bus had left early, so I didn't even think that the bus might be there, but because of the poorly worded statement, it couldn't leave. |
