Any bets involved? Relevant who 'we' support? If so, home team? away team? none at all? traffic chaos? or public transport relevant?

Are you a spectator? are you a participant?

Am I correct to assume you support the away team since you are worried about getting home?

Are we talking about
"home" as in state/city of residence?
or "home" as in home plate?

are we talking about a sport? soccer? baseball? american football? basketball?

if sports: if the home team won, would the away team have to play another game? if so, the away team and the home team have to play each other again? would the away team have to play another team?

If the home team won, would you or the away team miss a connection--on a bus/plane?

is it a educational competition? math? engineering?

if educational, if the home team wins, would the away team have to go through more rounds? or would they be completely out of the competition?

Wins: a particular single game? a series of games? a title?

Is the puzzle statement made during the game that it refers to?

Is extra innings relevant?

If the home team wins, will the game have run too late for you to use some sort of public transportation? Will the bus have stopped for the night? the trains? the subway? Will they still be running, but with a much longer time between each one?

Would it help us to figure out who the 'home team' is? or at least what city you're talking about?

does this involve a bus? charter bus? another mode of transportation? non-public?
is there an issue with players returning home? fans returning home?
was relevant information about the transportation learned before the game?
was there a change from the original travel scheduling?
was there a misunderstanding?
is proximity of the 2 teams relevant?

Yes-ish the the bus will have stopped for the night, and Yes to it's a charter bus... Hmm.

Is it the case not so much that the bus will have stopped, but that something that needs to be done so that the bus can take you all home will be impossible? A border crossing? a bridge? a tunnel? some part of the route home will be impassable?

Will the bus driver be unable? unwilling? to drive if the home team wins?

Is your difficulty in getting home related solely to the home team winning? or is it more related to something else that will happen if the home team wins?

NOTE: It is possible that "the thing that will happen" that will make the bus driver unwilling to drive will not happen even if the home team wins, however it is unlikely.

the driver will be unwilling because -
driving will be dangerous?
driving will be more difficult?
driving will take longer?
of a reason unrelated to driving?
of people on the bus?
of people not on the bus?

... he will go out and celebrate with the rest of the home team fans, and doesn't want a drink-driving offence on his record as he's a bus driver?

None of the above. Hint: It has to do with a specific thing the bus driver said.

Was what the bus driver said a threat? (I like Booklover's idea)
The person that says the statement is a member of the away team? The group that was supposed to take the bus is the entire away team? Is the bus driver also on a team?
Home has nothing to do with home plate/home base?

regarding what the bus driver said..

did he say it on the way to the game?
did he say it after arriving at the game?
was anything about winning or losing in his statement?
was "... if they win..." in his statement? something like it?
was it part of telling everyone where to meet the bus after the game?

relevant where you were to meet the bus after the game?
when the "how will we get home?" idea occcured, were you in the presence of the driver?
did someone ask the driver this question?
did everyone who arrived on that bus have the same problem?

is it something to do with getting to the bus on time?

the bus driver declared he was leaving at a certain time after the match? and if the home team wins then the fans might hinder your chances of getting to the bus on time?
