I had only one major problem during my stay in South Korea this summer. Although I thought I was describing the problem in a literal, matter-of-fact way, several people who knew nothing about Korea correctly objected that it was impossible to have that particular problem. How come?? |

I have graduated... twice in fact (A BSc and an MSc), but I'm still at university, just started a PhD in London this week Is it relevant what time of day you travelled? Overnight? through the day? (actually, I suppose these concepts are pretty meaningless....) Is it relevant what time of day you left? Morning? evening? afternoon? night? relevant what time of day you arrived? morning? evening? afternoon? night? Being 13 hours ahead is roughly equivalent to being 11 hours behind... if the international dateline was moved so that Seoul was in fact 11 hours behind, could you have the problem flying from RI to Seoul? Did you arrive the same day as you left? On the way back, you could arrive the day before you left - is this relevant? |

I'm guessing something to do with mathematics, but I could be mistaken. So your complaint was basically about the time difference and feeling like you should be asleep during the day and awake at night (at least initially), correct? And several people objected to that on logical grounds? Would it have mattered if you had gone from anywhere to anywhere else that was 13 hours ahead? |

If you left Seoul just before midnight and arrived in RI just after midnight the day after (ie, the journey had ostensibly taken about 10 minutes or so) could you have had the problem you claimed to have? Was the problem only related to the sleep cycle alteration aspect of jetlag? OR some other symptoms? would you have had the same problem if the difference was 12 hours? no But you still maintain that it was impossible to have that problem in the first place. Correct? Could you also answer the following questions that I have found you have missed of other users in previous posts pls: If you were "beamed up" instead of flown, would the same "impossible problem" exist? Did you sleep on the plane? relevant? In your statement, did you mention the length of the journey?noish Is the -ish because you could have only had the problem if you had travelled there by plane? Was it to do with problems you were facing in your own sleep cycle, such as sleep deprivation or tiredness during the day? Or something related to sleep? Say an alarm clock? Maybe you made a claim about your watch? This is a stupid guess, but maybe you have a standard 12 hour watch, and you claimed it was annoying to twist the dial 13 whole cycles, when all you needed to do was twist it once. |

Did you mention the fact that the time difference was more than half a day? Did you mention something about it seeming to take more than half a day to get there? Just to clarify, it would have been possible to have this particular problem going from Seoul to RI, right? So that means it's relevant not just that you moved the clock 13 hours, but that you had to move it 13 hours forward? Did what you say involve the concept of "losing" those 13 hours? |

So if you'd had to move the clock back 13 hours, might you still have phrased your complaint in broadly the same way? and would it have been wrong for approximately the same reason? When it is pointed out, is it immediately obvious that this problem is impossible to have? Or might it take some working out? Might you have accidentally said what you said replacing "13 hours" with "11 hours" (if you'd been going to somewhere with an 11 hour time difference)? Did you somehow imply that you'd actually lost a whole day? which is impossible because it would involve going all the way around the world, which would of course result in no jet lag at all? |

Did you even have to reset your clock? Did you fly for 13 hours and not even have to reset your clock? (the time your clock moved forward balanced with the time you moved backward? Do you have an analog watch?) Is the more natural phrase "over half a day?" Half a day? Something else? Is it relevant? |

Did you say something along the lines of... "I made time."? "I lost time."? "I chased the sun."? "I spent..." ? "...x hours on a plane..."? "...set my watch back 13 hours..."? "...and all I got was this lousy T-shirt."? |

Why not finish this one? Because I'm lost! Maybe a recap would help? Did you fly across the international dateline into yesterday? Did that make the 13 hour time difference much more significant? I.e. I got on a plane and before I knew it, it was last week? |

Did you somehow imply that 13 hours was shorter than half a day? |

Ok... rereading comments... You had jetlag... did you have some sort of whirlwind tour of Korea?... did something occur that made it impossible for you to sleep for several days on end? Did you claim you had stayed awake for 4 days straight and didn't hallucinate? Did the impossible claim involve... amount of time you were awake? Something to do with your eating cycle? Amount of time you traveled? The time you got somewhere? |

Would other people expect the jetlag to be only be 11 hours if you went around the world, the opposite way? Did you travel east-west or vice versa, or N-S? |

Is it relevant that you travelled west-east? Oh - presumably you can't actually experience "13 hours worth" of jetlag, as you've actually only moved 11 hours away from whatever time you started off on, is this relevant? |

YES!!! FINALLY!!!!!! The time difference bewteen Rhode Island & Seoul is 13 hours & I had a terrible problem with jet lag, lasting over 2 weeks. I complained continually that i was suffering from 13 hours jet lag until, of course, someone pointed out that there's no such thing as more than 12 hours jet lag. THanks for sticking with it, everyone, & for solving it, Bentarm, but why on earth did it take so much longer than many of my puzzles I considered much harder? Anyone, there's a new one awaiting you--guess where. |

Finally! I too have no idea why that took so long... I guess we were all looking for something more complicated when the answer was right there in just about every post! |
