Firewalking? Or something like? This kinda goes against what you said in a previous post, and I quote : "Is he in physical danger doing what he is doing? no" But scientifically a person who knew what he was doing wouldn't get burnt if he ensured that he walked on the hot coals/metal briskly without pause. Firewalking? Or something like? no to these This kinda goes against what you said in a previous post, and I quote : "Is he in physical danger doing what he is doing? no" Indeed, he is not in danger. But scientifically a person who knew what he was doing wouldn't get burnt if he ensured that he walked on the hot coals/metal briskly without pause. In fact there are no special skills like walking on fire involved. Anyway sorry if im on the wrong track. No problem that you were on the wrong track this time. Thanks Tobasi, really having a blast here! I remember a story about how a father gives his son a baseball bat saying it's magical and will only hit home runs. The confident son uses the bat and hits a home run, and attributes the success to the bat. But the father tells him after the game that the bat is ordinary. So maybe someone told this poor guy that he is in some way shielded from death if he does what he is doing, but the whole thing was innocuously funny and did not put him in any danger? I'm guessing since he is in no danger, the thing he is doing is stupid because he looks stupid doing it. No other reason? |

So, when Robert is in the mood to feel immortal, he finds the nearest escalator and does something stupid. Long shot --> Does he think the escalator is a stairway to heaven that he is successfully not going up because he is walking the opposite way? no Hence he is immortal? no No, this puzzle is not about religion. But indeed, the title "It makes me wonder" was a hint to the song "Stairway to heaven". The song title in turn describes a bit what he does: using an escalator to be immortal. Anyway, you found out this part of the puzzle without using the hint. Now, why does he believe to be immortal on the escalator? |

Is he walking the wrong way on the elevator slower than the stairs are moving? same speed? faster? (either he appears to stay in one place, or he's moving with or opposite to the escalator's progress) Is this relevant at all? Yeah in retrospect, should have dwelled a bit on the title :-) This reminded me of one of my favourite comedian's jokes... "I like an escalator, man, 'cause an escalator can never break. It can only become stairs. There would never be an "Escalator Temporarily Out of Order" sign, only "Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the Convenience." " - Mitch Hedburg RIP Mitch, we still get you. |

Is it relevant where the escalator is? If so, a shopping mall? the airport? an office building? a musuem? Is it relevant whether the escalator is moving up or down? Is there something more to Robert? I couldn't find any questions about him sorry if i'm repeating any... H? a? m? Is he visually impaired? hearing impaired? schizophrenic? mentally or physically challenged? Is he simply walking or doing something else as well? |

Is it relevant where the escalator is? If so, a shopping mall? the airport? an office building? a musuem? irrelevant to these Is it relevant whether the escalator is moving up or down? Yes and to save some time it is moving down, he is walking upstairs. Is there something more to Robert? I couldn't find any questions about him sorry if i'm repeating any... Indeed there were few questions about Robert, at the time being he might be a dog... H? a? m? But he is human, male and adult. Is he visually impaired? hearing impaired? schizophrenic? mentally or physically challenged? A little bit of all of these except schizophrenic. This is about everything you need to know about Robert. Is he simply walking or doing something else as well? simply walking |

Robert is climbing up an escalator that is moving down. Being sensory-impaired, he thinks he is climbing up a flight of stairs. So far so good? |

is there any more description of how he feels other than "immortal"? other relevant words to describe what he is going through? is there a more accurate word for his feeling? No to these, immortal is the most appropriate word. You could only say that while doing this he believes that something happens to him. |

does something more still need to be discovered about "time"? does he need a watch or clock when he goes on the escalator? how about before? after? the first time robert did this, did he decide that he needed to me immortal for the moment, then came up with the idea of the escalator? or was he going up the down escalator and then discovered this phenomenon? did a living person give him any idea? a H? A? M? is his proof that he is immortal .. because he doesn't die while doing it? escalator safety relevant? does he ever think he is going up when he is actually walking in place? does he get off the escalator when the feeling is gone? relevant why he stops the stupid behavior? is any misunderstanding relevant? misinterpretation? poor translation? does he think only he can experience this method of phenomenon? occupation relevant? any factors of lifestyle? |

Is anything more specific about the time period relevant besides "sometime since escalators have been in use"? Is this scenario based on a true story? or have you made it up? Does it have to do with the fact that his heart rate would be elevated while trying to keep up with the escalator? Was he inspired when he saw the other H. A. M. use the escalator? Was the other character using it in the manner which it was intended? Does the glowy light where the tread dissapears have anything to do with it? Is there always another excalator beside Robert's that is carring folks upward? Does Robert know what escalators are supposed to be used for? or does he think everyone else is doing it wrong? |

Sixtyeight: Would Robert reccommend to someone else to do this thing so that they can feel immortal? yes Obaone: Is anything more specific about the time period relevant besides "sometime since escalators have been in use"? No, it is as you say. Is this scenario based on a true story? or have you made it up? I made it up but it is realistic. Does it have to do with the fact that his heart rate would be elevated while trying to keep up with the escalator? no Was he inspired when he saw the other H. A. M. use the escalator? yes Was the other character using it in the manner which it was intended? yes or irrelevant Does the glowy light where the tread dissapears have anything to do with it? no Is there always another excalator beside Robert's that is carring folks upward? irrelevant Does Robert know what escalators are supposed to be used for? yes or does he think everyone else is doing it wrong? no |

Is whatever he is suffering from a temporary ailment or something he is permanently challenged by? Well he is not suffering but his slight handicaps are permanent. Is his immortality theory a literal one or a metaphorical or abstract reasoning? A mixture between literal and abstract reasoning I would say. |

does stupid only refer to the fact that he is walking the wrong way on an escalator? or is there something more? are the slight handicaps relevant to his desire to feel immortal? is he doing anything relevant with his hands? is it something to do with breaking rules? defying authority? |

does stupid only refer to the fact that he is walking the wrong way on an escalator? or is there something more? There are two stupid aspects of his behaviour: He is walking the wrong way on an escalator. There is weak point in his reasoning that this makes him immortal. are the slight handicaps relevant to his desire to feel immortal? Not really, they only come along with a simple fact about Robert that hasn't been found out yet. is he doing anything relevant with his hands? no is it something to do with breaking rules? no defying authority? no |

Is he senile? Has short-term memory loss got anything to do with this? I think I need to go re-learn physics but is it comparatively easier to do what he's doing than to walk up an actual flight of stairs, giving him the illusion that he is fitter in some way? |

do we need to find out more about the previously mentioned guy that inspired the act? yes absolutely someone else? no quote: does he get off the escalator when the feeling is gone? f. A. lets dissect this FA.. is anything relevant about getting off the escalator? no does the immortal feeling subside? yes anything relevant about ending this "stupid" act? not really The f. A. was that the feeling of immortality would end while he is on the escalator. In fact, this feeling stays a bit after he has left the elevator. Anyway this is less relevant than the previously mentioned guy. |

------------------ SPOILER ------------------ Robert is getting a bit long in the tooth. His doctor suggest him to do more sports in particular to walk the stairs instead of taking the lift. According to him, every step you make increases your lifetime by five seconds. Robert has full confidence in his doctor so he concludes that it is impossible to die while you are climbing stairs. Since he lives in a bungalow he goes to a nearby shopping centre to ascend the descending escalator. He believes to be immortal while doing this (and a short time afterwards). Sorry, if this puzzle was a bit silly but I think it was clear right from the start. Thanks to everyone for joining this puzzle, until next time! |
