Because I decided to save some money, I sometimes have to keep the window closed - even in summer. |

if money was not an issue, would you always have the window open? sometimes? is this relevant? I'm assuming you are more likely to have the window open in summer. Correct? is this purely for temperature reasons? or are there any other relevant reasons why summer is different? are there times now when you open the window? is sound interference a problem? decibel level of some thing(s) relevant? Are you saving money on bills? other necessary household expenses? |

Correct? is this purely for temperature reasons? or are there any other relevant reasons why summer is different? I just added the "summer" bit to take away the obvious answer "to reduce heating costs" - otherwise seasons are irrelevant. are there times now when you open the window? Yes is sound interference a problem? No decibel level of some thing(s) relevant? Yes, if you just mean the volume of some noise. No for any acoustic/technical issues Are you saving money on bills? The thing you save money on, is it something you pay per time you use (like clothes, drink, food)? something that you use and then later get a bill (similar to phone or credit card bill)? or something that you just pay because you have to (like county taxes or charges) |

If the window is kept open, the noise enters the living room. Does this noise affect you physically? Emotionally? Does it affect only you? Does it bother you only because you have to spend more money because of it? Are you the only inhabitant of the house? If no, then do the other people living in the house get affected as much? Are there other inhabitants in the building? Can they save money by shutting their windows? Do you save money on medicines? Any other treatment? Do the noises come from people you know? Is this relevant? Are the noises targetted at you? Does it get noisy outside only when the bar opens? In the night? Only on some nights? Do you know before-hand when the noise is going to start? Other than shutting the window, is there anything else you can possibly do to stop the noise? Phew... That was a LOT. I'm new to this, so I'm sorry if most of the questions are irrelevant or annoying. I'm really intrigued though, and I want to know how you save the money :-) |

So there are people in the bar watching a football match, and a majority of them cheering for a particular team (so you would know which side is winning if you could hear their screams).... Any of this FA? Was there another way of 'not hearing' that you avoided paying for by closing the window? Would you have broken something in anger or ecstasy at hearing the cheering, that you would have spent money on? Are you watching the football match at the same time too? Or are you listening in on a radio? If not, do you not want to know the outcome of the match because you can't see it while its happening? |

Do you like football? Do you like watching football matches? If yes, then do you go to the bar to see the matches sometimes? Do the people in the bar, who are watching the match, get drunk towards the end and throw things at your building? Or act in some other manner which causes you to shut the window? The relevant noise refers only to the cheering of the people in the bar? Or also the cumulative noise of the bar? Can you shut the window and save money if a football match isn't in progress? Do you have a favorite football team? Do you shut your window particularly when they're playing? Does the amount of money you save depend on what teams are playing? |

So.. You opted not to pay for a certain channel or broadcast from your cable provider (possibly any cable service). and as a result.. when there is a crucial play in a soccer match that you are watching (from another type of provider), you can hear the crowd at the bar, (which pays for this expensive broadcast), cheering before you see the play on your tv/monior/radio/whatever, thereby diminishing your enjoyment of a live sporting event? |

Ok, This should be close enough for a *SPOILER* When I moved to this place, my landlord informed me that one can receive most of the cable TV programs here with digital terrestrial TV (DVB-T) here instead and so one need not spend money on cable TV. Only later I found out that the broadcasting/decoding etc. of the digital signals causes a lag. So when I watch a live football(soccer) match I have to be sure that the window is closed, otherwise I would hear the people from the bar across the street cheer for goals before I see the ball even near the goal. |

I don't think the title will make a good puzzle, so I just tell the story. The title is the key line of a German TV commercial (translated into English, of course). The only link to this puzzle is that the commercial features the manager of the "local football heroes" Schalke 04, who are ressponsible for the loudest cheers across the street. In the spot, he is told by his girlfriend not to touch a pretty giry walking by, when he replies that she should just take a look at and not touch his beer. (After Schalke just came short of winning the championship, rival fans used to poke fun at them by attaching this phrase to a picture of the trophy...) |
