The second thought the third was still going. That he wasn't is merely a coincidence |

Does 'going' refer to an action still in play? not necessarily movement per se, but perhaps an action that has a logical and chronological method to it, such as a test or a game play? Is the First relevent? if so: has they 'gone' already?, about to 'go'? No-one moves, correct? However is movement implied (i.e. virtual reality simulation?) Just checking: 'he' relates to the third? If I replace the word 'coincidence' with 'accident', would I still be describing the same situation? (My train of thought: 2 believes something about 3. However, this belief is labelled coincidental, indicating that 2 has no communication with 3 with which to verify this assumption, making it open ended. However, it IS labelled a coincidence, wich means it is coincidental that 2 is wrong, which rarely defines a coincidence! Perhaps 2 really should be right, it is just accidental that 3 is not still going and consequently 2 is wrong!) apologies for a long winded, verbose dose of crazy-logic! Or is it really a coincidence that the second is wrong? |

Wopuld this have to do with John Adams and Thomas jefferson who both died on the 4th July in the same year. I believe Adams last words were something like "Thomas Jefferson lives " unaware that Jefferson had died earlier that day. My only doubt is whether they were the 2nd & 3rd presidents. |

I believe Adams last words were something like "Thomas Jefferson lives " unaware that Jefferson had died earlier that day. My only doubt is whether they were the 2nd & 3rd presidents. And of course they were... You have it exactly... the only thing remains to say... **********Spoiler************* John Adams the Second President of the US died on the same day as Thomas Jefferson the Third president of the US. John Adams died expresssing the belief that Jefferson lives... even though Jefferson had died some hours before him. Not just was it July 4th but it was July 4th 1826... 50 years since each had signed the declaration of independence So The Second died thinking the third was going... and that he wasn't was a co-incidence |

A nice puzzle Tom. I've always been struck by the "timeliness" of their deaths given the historical day they chose to shake of the mortal coil. Lots of good websites out there with the last words of the great and not so great. Tons of potential puzzles there no doubt. BTW i'm sure you'll return the favour and shortly spoyle my "Something for the weekend" |

That's the fun of these puzzles though init... by asking questions and chipping away you get to the truth....OK Peter got there in one fell swoop, but you were on the way there... I was waiting for you to start asking about the job... and then you'd have been well on the way! Well done BTW on great groundwork. |
