So I'm sitting there with my wife when I look over at her and say "Ulysses." A few minutes later she's looking at me like I'm some kind of extra-terrestrial who just materialized on the couch. I have to admit, it did enhance her opinion of me at the time (but then, we weren't actually married yet). Why would I say that and why would she be impressed (and, perhaps, why shouldn't she have been)? I fear this is a feeble puzzle - apologies in advance. |

Were you watching TV? Some kinda quiz show? Was the answer Odysseys to which you guess Ulysses? Leading your wife to see that you weren't a nerd, but maybe she shudnt have been too impressed abt tht |

Noobdogg Posted on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - 10:04 pm: Were you watching TV? Yes! Some kinda quiz show? Yes! Was the answer Odysseys to which you guess Ulysses? But no. Leading your wife to see that you weren't a nerd, but maybe she shudnt have been too impressed abt tht My nerdliness has never been hidden from anyone, so no. Golly, the puzzle's even feebler than expectorated - got major stuff figgered out in the very first post. Or Noobdog is too smart... |

LoL thanks, but that was my best guess... so methinks this will go on for a while Title relevant? Did you say 'Ulysses' before the question was read out? Since you knew the question already (having seen the show before i presume, reruns of jeopardy ftw)? So the question was, "What was the ODysseus also known as?" ? Some other question for which the answer was Ulysses? So she was impressed that you watch reruns of jeopardy (this is where my logic fails me lol)... but shudn't have been considering the L-shaped impression on one's forehead that appears out of watching RERUNS OF JEOPARDY ? (guilty :-( ) |

Did you say 'Ulysses' before the question was read out? Strictly speaking, yes, but could be misleading... Since you knew the question already (having seen the show before i presume, reruns of jeopardy ftw)? No, that's not it. So the question was, "What was the ODysseus also known as?" ? No and an FA lurking... Some other question for which the answer was Ulysses? Yesish, but same FA So she was impressed that you watch reruns of jeopardy (this is where my logic fails me lol)... but shudn't have been considering the L-shaped impression on one's forehead that appears out of watching RERUNS OF JEOPARDY ? (guilty :-( )No, I hadn't seen that particular episode before, and it was, in fact Jeopardy we were watching (this relates to the FAs noted above). |

Right so the question is indirect... say something about Bloom or Bloomsday... and she was puzzled and you supplied the connection! eg Jeopardy : Leopold Bloom Contestant: James Joyce wrote about which character? wife to be : Huh? You : Ulysses! Brillant! |

Not exactly. eg Jeopardy : Leopold Bloom Nope. Contestant: James Joyce wrote about which character? wife to be : Huh? You : Ulysses! Brillant! She did think I somehow knew more than I did. |

Having prior knowledge of this story (having worked with Bodo in real life), I will have to abstain from this puzzle. Darn it. |

Not a show I've watched much... I know the basic format... you get a category... and then an answer in that category and have to phrase a question to get that answer. So was the category James Joyce and you chanced your arm? |

Was it something along the lines of "Author James Joyce is best known for - " and you answered "What is Ulysses?" before the answer finished? And not because you are a whiz at Lit but because that's the only work of Joyce you knew? |

Sorry, Mike. **** Spoiler **** It was actually Final Jeopardy, and the "answer" was something about "The book by an Irish author about blah blah blah" or similar, and as soon as that was revealed I turned to my wife and said "Ulysses, by James Joyce." She thought I was kidding/goofing, but then it turned out to be the proper question (I don't think I actually did the "what is" part) and she was starting to think I was some kind of super-literature-nerd. I had to explain to her that he was the only Irish author I could think of and that was the only work of his to which I knew the name (kudos, Andrea). |

*takes a bow* That sounds like how I've earned my reputation among my family as being a Quiz Show Queen. About 1/2 the time my guess is the only thing I know about the subject in question. Nice puzzle. |
