Is there something relevant about the words "black coffee", as distinct from their meaning? ie, if we spoke a bizarre language which was exactly the same as English but in which the phrases "black coffee" and "onion bhagi" had swapped meaning, would you still have given her the money for saying "black coffee"? For saying "onion bhagi"? Might you have given her the money if she'd said "black toffee"? If you'd been speaking French, and she'd said "café noir", would you have given her the money? |

Is there something relevant about the words "black coffee", as distinct from their meaning? no, not really ie, if we spoke a bizarre language which was exactly the same as English but in which the phrases "black coffee" and "onion bhagi" had swapped meaning, would you still have given her the money for saying "black coffee"? no For saying "onion bhagi"? yes-ish: I think I'm right with those, but it's a bit of a brainbender. It wouldn't *quite* work with onion bhagi Might you have given her the money if she'd said "black toffee"? no! If you'd been speaking French, and she'd said "café noir", would you have given her the money? yes-ish, but difficult to answer for sure |

Does a physical cup/other quantity of black coffee exist or has one ever existed anywhere in the world which is relevant to this puzzle? When she said "black coffee", was she referring to the liquid that one gets when one takes the beans of the coffee plant, roasts them, grinds them and then adds hot water? To a specific quantity of black coffee? Or to the substance in general? Were you expecting her to say "black coffee"? Would you have been surprised if she'd said one of the other things which would have resulted in her getting the money? The other things she might have said which would have resulted in her getting the money: liquids? drinks? hot drinks? foodstuffs? items of clothing? titles of works of literature? species of pumpkin? Was the question a memory test of some sort? Did it rely on some previous experience you knew her to have had? |

Yes! |

Wre you watching a game show? Is the reason that only those three drinks would have got her the £5 because those were the answers to a question on TV? Was it anything like, "I'm thinking of three drinks containing a colour...if you can name one/all of them you win"? |

Is it a well known game show? Would it help to find the exact show? Is it one when you have to name objects fitting in a certain category? Was she trying to predict what the contestant would guess? Were the three drinks that would have won her the £5 pounds chosen by you? The gameshow devisers? The contestant? |

Does the quiz test general knowledge? Luck? Knowledge on a particular subject? Did the contestant say "black coffee"? "pink gin"? "orange juice"? Did the contestant win anything? Could the contestant reasonably have said "green tea"-maybe it wouldn't be right, but you could have understood why they said it? Well known gameshows: Who wants to be a millionaire? Weakest Link? Mastermind? |

Were the three drinks 3 of the four options? Was the other also a colour drink? Did the contestant say the fourth one? Was the question "which is the odd one out"? Was the person who said "black coffee" playing along with the quiz at home? If she had been a contestant and said "black coffee" would she have won? Are the three lifelines within the game relevant? Was her saying of black coffee due to her general knowledge? Luck? |

Is this an easy question, one that everyone should know the answer to (ie, the £100 or £200 questions)? Was the correct answer a phrase or idiom which includes a colour drink? Something like "Which of these phrases means________?" Then the four options, each of which contains a colour drink? Did they also contain another word? More than one other word? The same word for each option? Should we find out what the fourth colour drink was? Were you playing a game with your ex where she had to say a wrong answer? |

Is this an easy question, one that everyone should know the answer to (ie, the £100 or £200 questions)? yes: good question. Was the correct answer a phrase or idiom which includes a colour drink? yes: not quite an idiom, but something else of relevance Something like "Which of these phrases means________?" not quite that, but close Then the four options, each of which contains a colour drink? yes Did they also contain another word? yes More than one other word? no The same word for each option? no Should we find out what the fourth colour drink was? yes Were you playing a game with your ex where she had to say a wrong answer? YES! Now then: why would we do that, and what was the question? Mopping-up time, I feel. Great questions! |

Is it an extremely well known song? A pop song? If so, recent? Traditional song? The other word in each option, was it also a colour? The same colour as the colour of the drink? The only song title I can think of at the moment conatining a coloured drink is "Red Red Wine". |

Black Coffee In Bed? no but see below Is it an extremely well known song? A pop song? If so, recent? Traditional song? The other word in each option, was it also a colour? The same colour as the colour of the drink? The only song title I can think of at the moment conatining a coloured drink is "Red Red Wine". You have it! The rest is garnish. On to the ********** SPOILER ************ Another 80s music puzzle, I'm afraid. My ex and I used to love Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Instead of the usual game of shouting out the questions, though, we played a rather silly variant. Especially in the early stages, the correct answers are usually too easy, so we devised a game where you had to shout out one of the comical incorrect answers before it appeared. The first to guess a wrong answer won a fiver. On this occasion the question was: Which of these drinks was a hit for UB40 in the Eighties? A Red red wine B Pink pink gin C Black black coffee D Orange orange juice Not sure if anyone has tried this game before, but I recommend it. It can be quite fun. Well played everyone, and especially to Enjay for making the final breakthrough. |
