A spurned lover intent on murder shows up at his ex's college dorm. He is able to get into the building, but he knows he can't stay too long, or risk being seen. Inside he finds her room, as well as to everyone else's, locked and empty, and he has no idea where to find her. The bathroom and kitchen are also under lock and key. But he planned for this.

Within hours she is dead. How did he do it?

Is she actually on campus at the time of her death? Is he actually on campus at the time of her death? At the time of her death, is he in a kitchen? In a bedroom? In a bathroom? In a lecture theatre? Does he own any keys? Does he enter any of the students' rooms on the day of the killing? Are mobile phones relevant? Lecture halls? Would this work in a rugby club? A church? A swimming baths? A betting shop? Does he actually carry out the killing himself? Are all "hes" the same person in the puzzle statement? Are all "shes" the same person (ie the victim) in the puzzle statement?

Is she actually on campus at the time of her death? Probably. Is he actually on campus at the time of her death? Irrelevant. At the time of her death, is he in a kitchen? In a bedroom? In a bathroom? In a lecture theatre? Irrelevant. Does he own any keys? No. Does he enter any of the students' rooms on the day of the killing? No. Are mobile phones relevant? No. Lecture halls? No. Would this work in a rugby club? A church? A swimming baths? A betting shop? Unlikely in these places. Does he actually carry out the killing himself? Yesish. Are all "hes" the same person in the puzzle statement? Yes. Are all "shes" the same person (ie the victim) in the puzzle statement? Yes.

Good questions.

Did anyone else die?
Everyone else? Did he cause a massive nuclear apocalypse, and the trip to the campus is just a diversion?
Does she go back to her room before she dies?
Does she touch anything that he touched?
Does he know which one is her room?
Does he touch the door to her room?
Is it relevant that he's her ex? Because it means he knows something about her dorm? Her habits?

The thing that she put in her mouth, I am assuming that she didn't have it with her since he was able to put poison on it without her knowing, correct?

then, is it something that she had hidden? I know she didn't have the key in her mouth; did she possibly put a key chain in her mouth?
was her door locked when she arrived home? unlocked? did she normally open the door with her keys? was she locked out? and maybe used something else to get in?

was the plastic item thin? was it a card of some sort? credit card? some sort of gift/advantage/points card?

thickness: less than 1/2 inch? 1/2-1 inch? over 1 inch thick?

length: less than 1/2 inch? 1/2-1 inch? 1-2 inches? 2-3 inches? 3-4 inches? over 4 inches long?

Does she have a roommate? Is she alone when she gets to her room? Is someone in the room when she gets there? While her ex is administering the poison to the object?

Is the object a pen that she chews? YES! ish.

Does she have a roommate? Irrel. Is she alone when she gets to her room? Is someone in the room when she gets there? Irrel. While her ex is administering the poison to the object? Irrel.

Does it take him long to administer the poison? No. Under a minute? Is it relevant what the poison is? Not really.

What's left to find out is what and where exactly the pen was, and what she was using it for.

Does she actually use the pen for writing? Or does it have another use? Does she have to sign in to the building for some reason?
Does she simply chew on it while she's thinking? Or for a specific purpose?
is it balanced on top of the doorframe? Hanging on a string from the handle?

I'm aware that some dorms in US colleges have 'whiteboards' on the doors to the rooms that work as a sort of realtime scrapbooks. Maybe she did this thing where she drew a quick sketch with the whiteboard marker using her mouth, elephant painting style? Possibly, the marker is attached to this board, which is how it was accessible to psycho.

These revelations bring us close enough for a...
******************SPOILER*********
He left a liberal dose of poison on the pen attached to her whiteboad. Many college students leave these on the doors of their dorm rooms, and write where they are on it whenever they go out. The girl returned to her dorm, then on the way back out, wrote her next destination on the door. As per her habit, she chewed on the end of the pen while thinking about what to write.

Good job everyone, and to Noobdogg for bringing it home!
