These only appear when things start to get exciting, but do they really exist at all? I used to think so. But now I'm not so sure |

*********** SPOILER ************ It just occurred to me one day that the term "fair weather fan" is an oxymoron. A fan is defined as an enthusiastic devotee, follower, or admirer of a sport, pastime, celebrity, etc.: a baseball fan; short for fanatic. A fanatic is a person with an extreme and uncritical enthusiasm or zeal, as in religion or politics. How can one have extreme and uncritical enthusiam or zeal only once in a while? So a "fair weather fan" cannot be a fan at all, but more like a sympathizer or advocate. Not that I expect the world to change based on what I think. The English language is full of things like this. Thanks everyone. I enjoyed this one. |
