If Carleen hadn't been in such an unusual profession, people would not have suspected her husband of having an affair. How come? |

Was her husband having an affair? The people who suspected him - Carleen? Her friends? family? colleagues? his friends? family colleagues? neighbours? Is it relevant where she lived? Is it relevant only that she had an unusual profession? (ie, would Albatross trainer do?) or are some specifics of the profession relevant? Did she work on her own? With her husband? Did she work from home? Is her husband's profession relevant? |

Is Carleen H/A/F? Is her husband H/A/M? (Sorry, I'm from Seattle - gotta check.) Does Carleen's job require her to wear a disguise at times? Costume? Does her husband meet her for lunch sometimes? Vice versa? Does Carleen sometimes come home, when everybody knows she should be at work, to see her husband? |

so am I to understand based on your answer to Bentarm's question that this puzzzle statement would work just as well?.... If Carleen hadn't been an albatross trainer, people would not have suspected her husband of having an affair. How come? do we need to know specifically what the job is?

sorry, these questions were badly worded (and English is a difficult language for dealing with negative questions): If it wasn't for the unusualness of Carleen's job, would her husband have met the other woman? Assuming so, would he have met her under different circumstances? When he met the other woman, was it just him and the other woman present? Did he meet her in secret? So the situation is something like the following: Carleen's husband meets a woman, a stranger, and gets into a conversation with her? Is it relevant how they meet? Just ordinary meeting between strangers? Something happens? he bumps into her? she bumps into him? he spills something on her? she spills something on him? He tells her "My wife is an albatross trainer (or whatever it is)"? He says "My wife has a very unusual job"? And the other woman responds in some way? She says "oh, I have that job too"? something more specific? Does she somehow imply that Carleen's husband is her husband? Did the other people overhear the whole conversation? Just what Carleen's husband said? Just what the other woman said? |

Did other people only overhear part of what the other woman said? Did she say any relevant specific sentence? If the entire conversation was just "hi, my names Marcelo, my wife Carleen is an albatross trainer" "oh, that's odd, I'm an albatross trainer too", would this puzzle work? Is the other woman married? relevant? |

Is the relevance of Carleen's job being unusual that that means it is more likely to come upo in conversation? That that means it is less likely for the other woman to have the same job? If the exact same conversation had occurred buy you replaced the words "albatross trainer" (or whatever) with "doctor" or "civil servant", could the puzzle work? Did the listeners hear the name of the job mentioned? If no, would they have still thought he was having an affair if they had heard it mentioned? If the listeners had heard any of what Carleen's husband said, would they still have thought it? If they had listened to all of what the woman said, would they have thought it? Did they hear her correctly, or mishear something? The relevant specific sentence, was it the other woman commenting on how coincidental it was for them to share a job? Was it her commenting on what her job was? Did she mention Carleen in the specific sentence? Mention Carleen's husband? |

Did she say something that implied Carleen's husband should keep something secret from his wife? That he should tell his wife something? |

Did she say he should tell his wife that she has the same job? Because Carleen might find it interesting? Did it sound like she was telling him he should confess the affair to Carleen? Something like "You should tell your wife about me"? Could this possibly work if Carleen's husband had found another strange link between Carleen and the other woman? Or does it only work with a job? |

You're very ORT--what shje said was even better than that!! Could this possibly work if Carleen's husband had found another strange link between Carleen and the other woman? yes, in fact the anecdote I got thisd from involved a shared & unusual first name, not a job Or does it only work with a job? no |

Did the other woman talk about how she shared something with Carleen (her job), but the listeners thought she was referring to sharing a man? Did what she said begin with "You should tell your wife"? "You have to tell your wife"? "I want you to tell her wife"? Could it logically have started with any of those phrases and still work? "You should tell your wife you met me"? "Tell her you saw me"? "Tell her you found me"? |

One day at a party, her husband met a woman with the same job. Both were amused, & upon saying goodbye, the woman added. "And don't forget to tell your wife you've found someone else!" which of course made those who overheard think he was having an affair. This is adapted from an anecdote I read by a man whose wife had an unusual first name. You know where my new puzzle is. |
