When they praised his organization's work, he knew it wasn't doing its job.

"It" = the university? A particular department? The IT department (no pun intended)? Are "they" just the general public?

Does the institution provide a particular service (besides the obvious education system)? If so, does it provide it exclusively to "them"?

Academic publications relevant? Peer review?

BLOOPER: The statement that "his organization" and "they" were the same may have been misleading. The thing that was praised was the IT department specifically, while the thing that "wasn't doing its job" was the university as a whole.

Also, "he" was a professor, not an IT worker, but this should not be relevant to the puzzle.

Academic publications relevant? No Peer review? No

Had he tried to modify some web pages? Upload new web pages? Did the praise involve the old version of the pages, and thus he realised that the new version was not online? A shot in the dark, I know.

More to the point, when you say that the university was not doing its job, are you referring to its educational duties? To the "particular service" (in lack of a better word) mentioned above?

Does the "particular service" involve...
  • science?
  • computers?
  • money?
  • social sciences?
  • art?
  • books?
  • modern technology?

More to the point, when you say that the university was not doing its job, are you referring to its educational duties? Yes To the "particular service" (in lack of a better word) mentioned above? No. This answer may have been slightly confusing - the "particular service" was the web site.

Recap:

Someone (not a student, faculty, or employee) praised a university's web site, and because of this, he (a university professor) knew that the university wasn't fulfilling its educational mission.

Looks like it's just you and me here, Alex...

Did the praise concern:
the "news" section?
announcement of vacancies?
the personal homepage of one of the staff members?
the homepage of one of the departments? The IT department?
the "research" section?
pages dedicated to students? to future students?
the library homepage?

If none of the above, does the page contain information about the university? faculty? other employees? students?

announcement of vacancies?
the personal homepage of one of the staff members?
the homepage of one of the departments? The IT department?
the "research" section?
pages dedicated to students? Not really "dedicated to students", but students were intended to be the primary beneficiaries of this information to future students?

No to all others

What does "svv" mean?

Exam results? Grades? Courses? A student portal? Some other form of communication/announcement?

Did the page contain information provided by the university? By any of its departments? Only some? Only one? By the administration? By another university? By someone outside the academia?

What does "svv" mean? Sufficiently vague values - in this case, it's "news" as in information aboug current happenings - but not the kind of "news" like you would find in the newspaper

Exam results? Grades? Courses? A student portal? Some other form of communication/announcement?

Did the page contain information provided by the university? By any of its departments? Only some? Only one? By the administration? By another university? By someone outside academia?

These are hard questions to nswer, so it might be easier to just give away this part. The relevant information was a schedule of "upcoming events" at the university - like guest lectures or demonstrations that students could go to.

So, did they praise a particular upcoming event that was listed on the page? A lecture? A demonstration? Subject relevant? Was the page praised by the same people that were going to give the lecture/demonstration?

Or did the praise concern the arrangement of the page, or some of its overall characteristics?

Do we need to find more about who "they" are?

Ok. I wonder what "they" have in common. Do "they" all do the same profession? Are they employees of the university? Of another university or educational institute? Is it relevant how many "they" are? 2? 3? 4? 5? 6-10? 11+?

No Is it relevant how many "they" are? <b>See next answer</b?>There was one person that made a specific comment, but there were probably many others (in the same group of people) that felt a similar way. The more people who felt that way, the more it would prove the university wasn't doing its job.

Do they have anything to do with...
Education / Academic Research (this one is probably obvious)? Yes, but only indirectly. No to all others.

Was the method which this parent or group of parents used in praising relevent?
Did they suggest anything?

Was a method of accessing their page relevent? i.e (say University of Melbourne) "My son was saying how easy your page is to use! You just have to type 'melbin uni' into the Google toolbar and click the top link twice. It's so intuitive!"

Did they suggest anything? Not "suggest" as in "you should do such-and-such" but definitely "suggest" as in inadvertently revealing additional relevant information

Was something illegal and/or unintentional involved? ie, "Wow, we can download music and movies for free through your server! I thought that was illegal!"

Was the fault human or mechanical?
Artificial or natural?

Was something illegal and/or unintentional involved? ie, "Wow, we can download music and movies for free through your server! I thought that was illegal!" There was nothing illegal involved, but the parents were using the information in a way the school didn't anticipate.

Was the fault human or mechanical? Human
Artificial or natural? Well, it was something that the parents were doing voluntarily, although whether to call it "artificial" or "natural" would be a matter of much debate

Was the information the parents were getting confidential? No

From Alex's earlier posts:
"The relevant information was a schedule of "upcoming events" at the university - like guest lectures or demonstrations that students could go to."
"There was nothing illegal involved, but the parents were using the information in a way the school didn't anticipate."

Were they getting information about upcoming speakers and then organizing protests or otherwise boycotting the speakers?

Did the lineup of events suggest something about the university? Such as the literature department offering only events hosted by pop singers? Or such as the science department hosting events like "Blow Stuff Up"?

Perhaps a lineup of events that was not representative of the school as a whole? Like a lot of events from one demographic when the school is diversified?

No to all. HINT: Figure out why the parents were looking at the web page to begin with.

Was there already an existing controversy at the university?

Was it the beginning of the year?

Was something mailed out to parents announcing a new website?

Were the parents looking for some spesific piece of information? if so, about the location of university? the curriculum? extra-curricular activities? fascilities for students? security arrangements? something else? The "upcoming events", See below

RECAP AND HINT:

The parents were looking at the "upcoming events" section of the website. They also told the professor that they did this, and what they did with the information. Because of this, the professor knew that the university wasn't succeeding in its educational mission.

Still to determine:

1. What were the parents doing with the information they were getting on the web site?
2. How does this reflect badly on the university as a whole?

Were the parents looking at the events and wanting to attend them themselves? Which meant the events were desired by "common" people? Which the (stuffy) professor saw as a failure of higher education?

Did all of the professors feel the same way? Or would feel the same way? Was the professor organizing/sponsoring any of these events?

Did the parents spread the word about these events? Did the professor deduce that others couldn't find the information and therefore relied on the parents to obtain it?

Wait, let's step back.

Did the parents deal with the information in a positive way? Negative?

Did the parents spread the word about these events? Yesish Did the professor deduce that others couldn't find the information and therefore relied on the parents to obtain it? Yope, explore

Wait, let's step back.

Did the parents deal with the information in a positive way? Negative? Depends on your definition of "positive" and "negative". Clearly the professor in question thought it was negative. The parents, however, would certainly consider it positive. Suffice it to say they were not criticizing, protesting, or disrupting the events, or anything like that.

Did the parents spread the word to other parents? Friends? Their own children (meaning the students)?

Did the parents say "I'll have to tell my son about this event" or something like that? And the fact that the son did not already know the events upset the professor?

Could the students access the website? Could they read the website? Did they read the website?

SPOILER: This comes from the book "Excellence Without a Soul", by Harry Lewis of Harvard University. Lewis reports that when talking to a group of parents, one parent said that he "didn't understand what everyone else was complaining about" because "I like how everything's online so I can see it from my office in California. That way every day I can email my son a list of events he can attend in the hours between his classes." Lewis was upset that Harvard students were still dependent on their parents in this way.
