Within 2 weeks we had 3 fire alarms go off in our building, which houses our cafe, and a dining hall. When our alarm goes off, even if we don't know why, we have to call the fire department to at least come reset the alarm system. The first time they came out and it turned out to be that someone had been cleaning a grill at the dining hall underneath a smoke detector, and the steam set it off. Strike 1. The second time a hypersensitive detector set off the alarm when a student burnt his toast in the self-serve toaster. Strike 2. So a couple of days later, Marta, my boss, was driving up to the building when she saw a fire in the dining hall's smoke break area. It was growing rapidly, directly underneath the gas line. She sent someone in to pull the alarm and again called the fire department. She told him we needed the fire department at our building and his response was a short "Is this a REAL fire???" Of course, it was, and once she explained the fire department came right out. |
