When I heard what Cordelia had for lunch, I said, "No wonder she's underweight," even though her lunch was quite fattening. How come?? |

Did she have to walk long distances to acquire her lunch? Was she a tuna fisher who had to haul in her catch single-handed? Was there something about her lunch that would cause her stress? Or was it simply that she was eating something very fattening, so you assumed that she had been advised to gain weight? Did she have to swim to collect molluscs from the sea bed? Did she eat large animals (eg moose) for lunch after wrestling them to submission? Did she eat shark? |

Does the food she eats also serve as a laxative? Is her food even appetizing? Is it something you or I would eat? |

Was her meal composed of more than one dish? You say the total amount of food she ate was not unusual, but what about the composition of the meal? Relevant what she drank? Do we have to figure out what vegetables she ate? Did she eat margarine? Cream? Soya milk? Soya products? I have just discovered how you pronounce "margarine"... will I ever learn this language?! :-) |

I have been told to gain weight... I eat more and I exercise (the sort that builds muscle). Does she do either of these things? Does she want to gain weight? Is that relevant? Did she eat the entire meal? Was she hungry? Was the food unappetizing? ("I ordered haggis.") Was the "fattening" food she ate something everyone eats normally but she didn't because she didn't want to gain weight/thought it was unhealthy? In the sense of the following: "I've never eaten fattening foods, but Doc told me to eat them." "Gee, no wonder you're underweight." That sort of thing? |

Did she put butter on her potatoes? If so, a lot? Did she have them with some other kind of relevant topping? Or plain? Maybe you were surprised that even when told to eat more fattening foods, she only had plain potatoes when she could have made them more fattening by adding a topping? |

Did you hear what she had on her potatoes, or just that she had potatoes? Did they come with something relevant (but not a topping)? I've asked a few similar questions which you said were ORT...did what she had for lunch somehow imply that she had a different idea of what is fattening that most of us? That what she considered fattening was not really particularly so? That she is accustomed to eating very non-fattening foods? If you hd just heard what she had for lunch, and hadn't known that she was eating it because she was trying to gain weight, would you still have made the comment? If you hadn't known she was underweight and just heard what she ate, would you have been able to realise she was underweight? |

Did you conclude from what she was eating now that whatever she ate before must have been very non-fattening? Before, would she have had the same thing without the potatoes? The potatoes without whatever else she had with them? Did she drink anything relevant? Is it relevant what she ate apart from potatoes? An interesting puzzle but......... In Ireland as you all know we eat a lot of potatoes(spuds). We are also very fond of butter and if i were having a mashed spud sandwich i'd layer the bread thickly with butter and then butter the mashed potato also . So wouldn't that be doubly fattening and accordingly make Cordelia put on the necessary weight. My wife is always nagging me about the amount of butter that I use and thinks I'll die with either a spud or bacon butty in my hand. Here's hoping!! |
