Did the police think he committed a crime but he did not? Yope Did they think he committed a crime more serious than what he did? No Was "it" (in the puzzle statement) picking up his fare? No, but... Recap: A taxi driver did two things in a row: 1. "It" - which he did while the cab did not have a passenger, but was on the road being driven. (Call this action A.) 2. The "criminal" action - which involved stopping the cab. However, this was a crime more serious than a mere traffic violation. (Call this action B.) If he had done action A about 50 feet earlier or later, then he would not have been branded a criminal.

Is it illegal to pick up a person of a certain race? To pick up a person of one race while ignoring another? Does this take place before 1940? Between 1940-1970? After 1970? If he had changed lanes earlier or later, he wouldn't have picked up the passenger and therefore wouldn't have broken the law, right? Because traffic patterns wouldn't have allowed him to? Because he wouldn't have noticed the person? Because he wouldn't be obligated to? |

Is it illegal to pick up a person of a certain race? See next answer To pick up a person of one race while ignoring another? Yes Does this take place before 1940? Between 1940-1970? After 1970? After 1970 If he had changed lanes earlier or later, he wouldn't have picked up the passenger and therefore wouldn't have broken the law, right? Yes, at least he wouldn't have picked up that particular passenger. Because traffic patterns wouldn't have allowed him to? See hint below Because he wouldn't have noticed the person? No Because he wouldn't be obligated to? No Recap/Hints: A taxi driver lost his job because he broke the law by picking up a white passenger while ignoring a black one. If he changed lanes 50 feet later, he would have been stuck in the middle of traffic and therefore not in position to pick up the passenger. The two questions that still need to be answered are: - Why would he have have been okay if he had changed lanes 50 feet earlier? - There is still one additional key fact that is needed to explain the situation. What is it? |

Is it because he himself is black and didn't want to look discriminatory by only picking up the black man? No Are you allowed to pick up more than one passenger in a taxi? You can certainly pick up more than one passenger at a time if they all get in as a group, but you're not allowed to pick up a passenger while you're already transporting another one ...I'm stuck on this one.... The answer is really quite simple. |

And if he had changed later, he would have missed them both, when he in fact changed lanes just in time to get the second passenger? (Thus making the first one angry?) Yes! Spoiler: This occurred during Operation Refusal, a plan implemented in New York City by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani to catch racially-discriminatory taxi drivers. Undercover cops posed as taxi passengers and hailed a cab, with a black cop positioned before the white cop. If the taxi driver passes the black cop to pick up the white cop, he is caught and his license is taken away. |
