Because of Romana's good fortune, an insult directed at her was accurate, but not in the intended sense. |

Romana suffered from anosmia for many years, but one day her sense of smell was miraculously restored. So when someone shouted at her "you smell", it was actually true. Hmmm. Maybe unlikely. But more seriously: does this puzzle hang on the double meaning of a word, along those lines? |

Her good fortune - winning something? avoiding some loss? recovering from an illness? If she hadn't enjoyed her good fortune, would the insult have been accurate for the intended reason? Or not accurate at all? |

Is it relevant who insulted her? Is it relevant why? Did they intend the insult to be accurate, or was it just a general hurtful thing to say (eg you might tell someone, "you're an idiot" even though they are perfectly intelligent really) Was Romana offended by the insult? If not, would she have been offended if she had not had the good fortune? Was the insult refering to her appearance? Intelligence? Personality? Was her good fortune related to any of these things? Did the good fortune mean that the intended meaning of the insult was not true? Or just meant that it was also true in another way? Did the insulter know about Romana's good fortune? Relevant? Did the good fortune change the very thing about her that the insult had been directed at? Other than Romana's good fortune and the thing about her that was insulted. do we need to know anything else about her? Any other relevant people than Romana and the insulter? |

Was the article written about something negative? Like... slavery or working conditions during the industrial revolution or what inspectors don't catch during restaurant inspections? Did somebody just read the story and say something like "Wow, that's bad."? Did the author take that exclamation to mean that he/she had touched the reader and made her point? An insult about a poem and an Opinion/Editorial? Or just the poem? Just the Op-Ed? Typical response to such pieces (in more words, usually): "I disagree." "Ugly." "Pretty." "Will you go out with me?" "Lesbo." or "Feminazi." Any of these along the right lines? |

After a google search, maybe this is it? Is "Romana" Romana Petri? Is what she published "The Umbrian War"? If so, was the insult "This is dead language!" or something along those lines? And of course, it really was, as Umbrian is a dead language. |

Ok... we've already established that the criticism wasn't directed at your poem or your Op-ed or that they were irrelevant. Does the criticism involve suggesting that you write something more worthwhile? Something different? I.e. You should write the news! You should work on serious journalism or have your own column. Is the choice of newspaper the source of critique? Is it a small newspaper? A tabloid? A large newspaper? A school newspaper? Is it an upstanding newspaper, but just happens to have an unfortunate title? I was on the newspaper staff for "The Hustler" - which is actually the name of Vanderbilt University's school paper (named after one of the old faculty) and has been the name long before the Magazine of similar name and far more ill repute came out. |

Depends on where the pauses fall and tone of voice. i.e. "You're Lucky! You got published." vs. "You're lucky you got published." Written humor is different from spoken humor because of these nuances. I.e. What did the fish say when it swam into the concrete wall? Answer: Dam! You have to say it out loud for it to be funny. Would you have to solicit the criticism for it to make sense? Does the criticism make more (any?) sense if it's in response to the question "What did you think of the piece?"? "Did you read my article?"? Did you like my story?"? |

The word rubbish? Something that could be construed as her articles only being good for the rubbish bin? In the intended meaning, would the word meaning rubbish be describing Romana herself? Her writing ability? Her articles? In the second meaning, would the word meaning rubbish be describing Romana herself? Her writing ability? Her articles? Is it the word meaning rubbish that can have two meanings? |

I'm still giggling at the word 'ejectamenta' So the relevant phrase is: Cut the crap? You don't know crap? Holy crap? To shoot craps? Perhaps Romana had published a treatise on faeces, and a reviewer had said to her: 'clearly, you don't know crap'? Anything along these lines? |

I'm surprused it was so hard, but I know I'm a crappy judge of a puzzle's difficulty. Please check out my new one!! |
