Do you mean location or the design of the shop itself Did this happen in the morning? could have at noon? ditto in the afternoon? yes evening? i always have a problem with the definition of evening (does anyone know). Suffice to say unlikely to happen after 5pm at night? so no Does the customer ask the mouthwash for himself? herself yes Is any accident involved? no Is food involved? no animals? no |

Will she use it to clean her mouth? Did she get something undesirable in her mouth? Is something serious at stake here (health, life, personal property, etc.)? If she doesn't get the mouthwash quickly, will she not be able to use it? Is there anyone else involved? If so, more than one person? Is the woman's profession involved? So, location is relevant...just that it is in a shop? Is the specific type of shop relevant? Neighborhood relevant? Country relevant? |

Was the relevant question the woman asked along the lines of the following: How do I use this stamp? Don't I have to lick it? Why don't I have to lick it? Will it really stick if I don't lick it? Do you take me for a fool? Was the woman still in the post office when she licked the stamp? After licking the stamp did the woman put it on the letter? Did it stick? Did she do anything else relevant with the stamp? The woman asked for mouthwash because: she fell uncomfortable? she feared to be poisoned? she wanted to clean her mouth? she wanted to use the mouthwash with the stamp? |

NO I feel i should clarify a few small points which you have pretty much established but maybe unaware that you have done so. The lady bought a stamp with a peel off back to it. She licked the peel off section first thinking it was a lick to stick stamp. Obviously the stamp wouldn't stick so the helpful clerk explained that she needed to remove the backing and the stamp would stick. She then removed the peel off backing and a further series of events occurs one of which is something which the clerk says to her. Your mission is to piece together what might have happened to make her feel she urgently needed mouthwash |

Did he say something that was directly related to the stamp? Like 'Peel it off, but this stamp is not like the old ones. You do not need to lick them, they are self-adhesive'? |

So the clerk said something which led the old lady to believe that the stamps had been somewhere filthy? Any wordplay involved? Any mishearings? |

Did the woman think that the stamps were in contact with / touched by: people? objects? something else? So the woman licked the stamp firstly when the film was on and a second time when it was off? Was it the first time she licked that made her want to wash her mouth? the second time? What did she think got into her mouth via the stamp: bacteria? viruses? other life forms? dirt? dust? a particular liquid substance? a particular solid substance? |

Ok, have an idea. After she licked the back of the peel-off section, the clerk told her to peel off the back to use the stamp. As she did so and then tried to lick it, he said (maybe without actually seeing she licked it??), that self-adhesive stamps had been introduced to avoid having to lick stamps that many people had been touching???? |

Perhaps, when she licks the wrong part, the clerk says something like: 'don't worry, love, I did the same', making her think that he has licked it? |

Tobasi Did she think that someone had already licked the stamp? yes Eli Ok, have an idea. After she licked the back of the peel-off section, the clerk told her to peel off the back to use the stamp. As she did so and then tried to lick it, he said (maybe without actually seeing she licked it??), that self-adhesive stamps had been introduced to avoid having to lick stamps that many people had been touching???? nice thought but no Woodworm Perhaps, when she licks the wrong part, the clerk says something like: 'don't worry, love, I did the same', making her think that he has licked it? not quite but see below Or something like: 'no need to lick it, love, it's been done already'? We have a winner SPOILER It's pretty much as you said it. The old lady buys a stamp in the post office and proceeds to lick the back not realising there is a peel off section. She mentions to the clerk that the stamp won't work who tells her to peel off the back. This she does but then licks the stamp again. The renders the self adhesive solution useless so the stamp still won't stick. She complains again to the clerk who explains the idea of self adhesion. Noticing the old lady's blank expression the clerk trying to be helpful says " Lets just say that these stamps have already been licked" which results in the old dear rushing into the Chemists next door. Thanks to all who played especially Woodworm for the solution and Tobasi for the groundwork. |
