I thought they were trying to sell me sports equipment, and I had no idea why. Then I realized what they really wanted to make me buy, and I understood why they were selling it to me, although I had expressed no interest in it. Rather silly little puzzle. |

They: a company? Advertisers? Salespeople? General unspecifiable "they"? Did you see an advertisement? Receive a cold call? Get visited by a salesperson? Go to a shop? Were they selling the thing to you because they thought you were interested? Because you looked like they might be? Because you had been interested in something similar? |

TV advert? Radio? Print advert? Was the advert targeted directly at you? Like sent to your address? Or targeted at your general market, like printed in a specialist magazine or shown during a specialist TV programme? If so, wuld other members of this group have been interested in the thing they were selling? Or generally aimed at everyone, like a billboard? |

Was the advert sent to you in some way? By post? Given to you by hand? Did you receive a telephone call? |

Is a pun or mistaken impression involved? A word with two meanings (one sports-related and the other something else)? Is how they thought you would be interested relevant? Your name? Profession? Location? |

Your name, as in Gourami? I think I know this: if so, I ran something very very similar a while back. (It's called 'Goodbye, gals' in the archive for 22 July 2007 if you want to check. I'm 99% certain it's the same puzzle, more or less. I won't reveal it here, so people can play on if they wish. It's good fun and you've added a neat new dimension to it.) |

Yes, wow, that's a strange coincidence. I'll go ahead and spoil, since its a repeating puzzle anyway. **********SPOILER On any website where I use the username "Gourami," the Google ads associated with that page always offer discounts on Discus. At first I wondered why they were trying to sell me a discus, since I had no interest in the sport, but eventually I realized that they were referring to the fish (gouramis and discus are similar freshwater fishes). What I didn't even realize was, on lateralpuzzles.com the discus ads come up no matter what your username is, because the word "discus" is in the url. I think that that's a rather bizarre coincidence. Thanks, Woodworm, for pointing it out. |
