When Emeline said, "I grew up in California," I started to dislike her, although she had never claimed to have grown up elsewhere & I have nothing against Californians--really. How come?? | ||

Is it relevant where you grew up? Did the California comment follow on from a relevant conversation? Had a relevant comment been made in the past? By you? By Emeline? By someone else? Would you have disliked her if she had said another state? Is there a specific aspect of California that is relevant? Was she suggesting that growing up in CA made her different than others? Superior? Inferior? Was she offering a sort of reasoning or excuse for something about her, eg "You're very...", "Well, I grew up in California you see" Is it relevant where she lives now? Where this conversation took place? Did you dislike her because she seemed rude? Snobbish? Overly complaining? Prejudiced? Did she expect you to feel sorry for her? Did she make it seem like growing up in CA was a bad thing? That she hadn't liked it? Was ashamed of it? | ||

No--& I'm not a Californian. ****SPOILER***************** Emeline has an Oxford accent, which is fine...if you're from Oxfoirds. But it's revoltingly affected if you're from California, so when I learned that she was, I disliked her. This has nothing to do with turning your back on your "roots"; I think roots are for potatoes & have zero interest in mine. But I despise people who think roots matter so much that they fake upper-class accents. (I sound as though I grew up in Brooklyn, because I did.) All my puzzles lately seem to be either very easy or very hard--unfortunately, this was one of the former. Which will my new one be? Check it out & see! |
