I was surprised to read something on the front page of a newspaper the other day. When I got closer I found that it was something totally different to what I thought it said. However, I wonder whether the editor knew what he was doing? What did I think I saw, and what did it actually say? |

Was it a headline? An article? A picture caption? The name of a writer? Did you think the editor should have picked up on the potential misreading of the thing and changed it to something else? Was the actual thing it said something unsurprising? Were you surprised at what you thought you saw because it didn't make sense? You wouldn't have expected to see it on a newspaper? Is April Fool's Day relevant? |

Did it say something that you thought was self-referential, but actually referred to something else? (e.g., "Newspaper To Shut Down") |

As an aside, my mother-in-law was on the phone to me today saying I'd left my book at her place about the British National Front. As it is I am apolitical in terms of worldly governments and party politics and so I couldn't think what on earth she was talking about. However, once she went to fetch the book all became clear. It was my copy of the BNF (British National Formulary) of Medicines! Clearly she'd confused the titles BNP (British National Party) and NF (National Front) and had put two and two together to make five or more. |

Was it an advert? Part of an article? Name of the paper? Some other title? Would it help to discover which newspaper? Was it written after publication by someone who looked at / read the newspaper? |

ssh - I'm not really here - much too much work to do! Was it something you got inside the paper? at the same time? did you have to send away for it? was one paper enough to get it or did you have to buy for a week or similar? Was "free" one of the words you read? "Free to every reader" - so you optimistically thought the paper was free that day? |

Woodworm Free £1 Bet? yes! *********** SPOILER *********** I was a few feet away from the Sun paper and was surprised to see Free Tibet on the front page in the header bit. On closer examination I saw that it said Free £1bet (for every reader, on the line below, in smaller writing). It was the day of the Grand National btw Good teamwork. |

Nice puzzle Lynne. As an aside I work for an Irish Bank in their project area. In the past few years compliance has become the no.1 agenda throughout the company and strict penalties are imposed for any breech of compliance or regulatory procedures. Accordingly nearly all my work colleagues backed the horse named "Comply or Die" who duly obliged by winning the Grand National. I backed the second horse (Bah!!) |

Bad luck! I can see a funny symbol in front of the 1 sign (it may appear of course in this PS). I thought I'd got rid of it, but it must be the browser. |

Hmm the pound sign which I definitely put in as I could see it again when I went through my history, has now changed to question mark. |
